How to create a landscape from original map landscape

Hallo everybody,
I'm starting with Vue and I'like to re-create a landscape based on the original geographic maps.
(Sometimes, these maps could be also old) But first, I should ask which kind of geographic maps I need to make that....
In essence, I would like to know if and how to import maps in Vue so that they can be recognized ti rebuild original landscape, or if you can still do this type of operation (create a landscape that actually exists based on geographical maps and panoramic photographs) in Vue.

Many thanks!

Bye

What file format are your maps in (the file's 3-letter (sometimes 4-letter) extension)?  Or do you not have any yet?

Hallo Shawn,

yes, I'have any yet cause I don't know if needs...

Now I've just some common geographic map about the territories I want to "extrude" in Vue...  but I don't know how trasfrorm this map in a file good for Vue o maybe how make this map like a image reference for Vue and so on.

I think could be really hard to find a file  (of course I can try) and I hope tha could be possible to transfrom image from geographic map (or from google Earth, for exemple) in a reference image good for Vue, ti make this kind of job.

Many thanks!

You can use Dem, tiff, geotiff, but you might also get your map in other formats that need to be converted to one of the above to be used in Vue.

Okay, many thanls,

if I've really understood I have to obtain a Dem, tiff, geotiff file. Do you know how can I convert in .dem, or geotiff my geographic map? Maybe is possible to "extract" from a geographical map (paper map from a territory, a city, a park... o from google earth sat images) ? For exemple, I've a paper map of Yellow's stone Park, any file but just the paper map: how can I convert this map in a dem, or geotif file?

many thanks!

bruno021 ( ) posted Fri, 03 February 2012 at 4:43 AM

What format is your map? What color space?

Theiamania ( ) posted Fri, 03 February 2012 at 5:10 AM

I don't have a map in a file but a normal paper map like a city map you can buy at the drugstore...

I would like to "transform" (by photo camera or scanning map...) this map  in a file good for Vue (.dem, tiff, geotiff and so on) ... but, repeat I don't have any file now . I didn't find a file DEM in internet and I didn't create these kind of file from a real map cause I don't know if I can create that; right now certanly I don't know how to make that.

Thanks!

Well a street map won't do, I'm afraid. If you want to recreate landscape topology, you need measures from see level, black being see level, and white the highest point in your map. Your street map, when scanned and processed to black and white will only show buildings and streets.

Okay everybody, now are arriving two kind of files: a .dmt file and a .tiff file with a greyscale map of the geographical area I need.

I'd like to knownow  what I 've to do having a .DEM file, and having a .tiff file.

Which are the procedures to create a terrain in vue based to .dem file or base to a greyscale tiff image?

Any guide or tutorial?

MANY THX!

For dem, you simply load the file as as you would load an object. For tiff, 2 possibilities, IF and only IF the file is a 16bit depth greyscale file (tiff format ios very versatile, and can be 8, 16 bit, multi or single layer, with embedded alpha or not...).

1- Load a standard terain, and then reset it (so it's 100% flat), then click on the Picture icon on the left toolbar of the terrain editor, load the image in the next dialog, set the blending to 100% towards the image, and you're set.

2- Load a procedural terrain, right click the preview sphere of the altitude production function on the riught of the terrain editor, and choose Edit.

Delete all present nodes, click on the Texture map icon on the left toolbar of the function editor, connect the new Projected texture map node to the altitude output. Next, load in the tiff file under the texture map preview, set the resampling to "bicubic" to avoid artifacts on the terrain.

Hallo Bruno,

really many thanks! I'm going to try what you suggested and I'll replay  you if I've problems, okay?

About .tiff, im going to create that in photoshop in 16 bit or, maybe is bettere, in 32 bit. Non problems.

THX!

p.S. Are you italian?

Hi Bruno,

I can't make what you suggested at point 2: can you explain in detail, maybe with a screenshot what I've quotedfrom you, please?

Many,many thanks!

There you go!

Theiamania ( ) posted Fri, 10 February 2012 at 11:10 AM

Many thanks, Bruno!

I'm testing both solutions but the big problems is to find a good DEM and, for MAc users, to trasform this DEM files, a a GEOtiff or in a DEM Ascii good to be import in VUE. For Win users ther's 3DEM that can generate a good DEM file but for the Actual Mac OS (Intel 64x) I didn't find a similar software like 3DEM for Mac. Grrrrr

I post a old .pdf which guide to make a very, very good terrain from DEM file to VUE.Maybe have you something to add... the tutorial is really old...

Old tutorial but super result!

Ciao!

You can attach a file, as long as you change the extension to jpg, and let readers know which format to change the extension to after downloading. The pdf is still valid but the "Combined dem" import doesn't seem to exist anymore.

Maybe you can find a useful GIS app for the Mac on this page....

Theiamania ( ) posted Fri, 10 February 2012 at 1:42 PM

Here I can't understand wht you mind. I'm here (see screenshot) but after I can't go forward... :(

You connected the altitude output to a Color node. You need to connect it to a Projected texture map node, which is the icon just below the highlighted Color node.
