Hedd I just looked at the link and I'm not sure about it. This seems kind of dodgy to me for some reason. The software runs from $400 to $1000 version depending so this must be the 30 day free trial they (iPi) offer. If you want I'll download a copy and check it out in a couple of days or so and let you know. I have a stand alone Kinect sensor and can try it but won't be able to get to it till I finish sweeting this damn music video I've been working on for the last week. I'm running up towards my deadline in a hurry.

im surprised that the poser comunity hasnt jumped on the kinect bandwagon, surley it would make posing and animation alot easier. I wish as a kinect owner myself they would have some sort of poser bvh export from kinect but sadly you have to pay an extortionate amount or have motion builder.... so i wait till someone in the poserverse makes this happen

Getting old and still making "art" without soiling myself, now that's success.

which Kinect? there are now 2 units.

the 360 version, with a focal length in feet and a PC version with a focal length in inches.

if your using a PC, your supposed to use the PC version... which is more expensive...

There is an ongoing opensource group that has been working with the Kinect hardware since it showed up. They have done some amazing things with it. Mo-cap is one of them. iPi is good software at a fair price for what it does. Single camera, full body mo-cap with no marker system required; for about a grand. I'll find a link to the hack kinect guys on the other computer and post it up later. If you already have a Kinect then they are definately worth your time.

Hedd... I've downloaded and checket out the free iPi download at DAZ. It's just the  iPi interface to the Kinect unit. It is the device drivers for the Kinect and/or a Playstation Eye camera. It needs more than one Eye camera to get a good result. This interface does record Kinect output as avi video but each frame contains 4 tiled images with a transparent full screen overlay of the farme. Not sure of the purpose of this output as this is only the interface for the full iPi software which, of course, isn't free.

Actually, a company called NYKO makes an adapter lens that does this. Cost about $30. Got one and it works great. The iPi software we are discussing shows a slightly vignetted output when this adapter is used. Never mentioned the vignetted output as I never tried the adapter till just now. Don't see the point in using a device that focuses in close when you are doing full body scans.

Depends how you are going to use it.

If you will make use of animations, I highly recommend it. I used it on some of my animations and I was using a 3 camera setup using webcams because thats what I have right now and the results were not that good. Once I got the dough I will get playstation eyes or kinect cameras and that will tremendously improve the mocap.

think its the technology that interested me more then making movies, anyhow I grabbed the proggy so one day may have a look at it, thanks for your input and 1 question, how did you have the 3 cams set up ?? frontrighttop? or front and 2 at angles??

Left Front Right in my case. Visit the main site and see their Tutorials section and they have it all there.

wow thats a fair wedge of cash, guess thats on the back burner unless I win the lottery

thanks for the help

The iPi recorder is the free application that records from the Kinect. You then run the expensive application that crates the BVH file from the recorded video.

The recorder can for example be run on a notebook computer on location, then the files transferred to a fast workstation for the number crunching.
