Subject: transfering poser to another laptop

Boofy ( ) posted Sat, 21 April 2012 at 4:25 AM · edited Thu, 25 July 2024 at 6:34 AM

Hiya,

I have Poser 5 on a dying laptop, how do I transfer it to my new laptop? I cannot afford to buy another download.

Thanks.

Do you not still have your install package? That would be the only way I would know to do it.

I can't remember if this works with Poser 5 or not, but I do remember that it works with Poser 4. With P4 you can copy the entire Poser directory to the new machine, then manually set up the shortcut icons and everything works as expected. This may work for P5, it just depends on if P5 needs any specific registry settings. You could always give it a try to see if it works with P5.

through to poser 7/pro, poser does not write to the registry in any important fashion I've found. (I had to wip my C at one point and forgot to reinstall Poser 7. I found it ran from my D with out any reinstall needed.. same for 6 and 5. I don't know about 8+ tho)

Like basicwiz says - install P5 on the laptop you'll need the serial-number. That was often sent by email or it might still be avaliable on the old CP site if you know your password. If you bought it under the new CP system, or got it free from CP, then you should find it in your account. Then on your old laptop, copy the whole runtime folder to some CD's, DVDs or an external USB hard-drive. Then simply copy that folder into the poser directory on your new laptop. Khai - don't think that would work on 8+ as that installs some stuff to the windows directory. flash stuff I belive.

*basicwiz, I am not sure what I had as it is difficult to get into the old laptop...sigh

*mrs sparky, do you have a link to the old cp site I will try there first as I think that was where I got it from.

Does this mean that when I get my new 64-bit Windows 7 system in a couple of weeks, I can just copy my entire P5 and P7 program folders over and both of these old versions of Poser will work along side my fresh instalation of Poser Pro 2012?

Intel Core I7 3090K 4.5 GhZ (overclocked) 12-meg cache CPU, 32 Gig DDR3 memory, GeoForce GTX680 2gig 256 Bit PCI Express 3.0 graphic card, 3 Western Difgital 7200 rpm 1 Tb SATA Hard Drives

Boofy... http://support.contentparadise.com/faqs/letter.html Failing that use the help/support thingy at CP, support is usually pretty helpful. Terry... Possibly. Though even if the actual older apps don't run, you should still be able to call the Runtime folder up in 2012. Indeed, I have 1 runtime folder which is used by P6, P9 and one of the Pro ones.
