don't buy HP would be my starting point (based on friend's experiences) and Samsung has a very solid rep so there's my thought on this....

Once in a while I look around,
I see a sound
and try to write it down
Sometimes they come out very soft
Tinkling light sound
The Sun comes up again

Don't know anything about these specific models, but I second bobbystahr's advice about avoiding HP - I have had a couple of HP machines & have been unhappy with both of them (hardware conflicts & other flaky behavior, lots of bloatware & poor technical support)...

I purchased a DELL Vostro 1710 about 4 years ago which is now my partners full time comp, (she does a lot of photography). the reason I chose dell is they allowed me to re-spec the basic model to suit my needs for digital art.

I feel that this option is better than buying straight off the shelf and is maybe worth your friends consideration.

Cheers
