Subject: Saving a Prop Pose

Sometimes its the simple things...argh

I've got a prop, I have positioned it.  How do I save that as a Pose Preset for it?  There is no Plus sign to let me do so.  I can't seem to find the right keyword in the doco.  I fail at a good search term here as well.

I've done it in DS with PFE.  Just need the Poser equivalent op.

OK, so I finally found a thread that said you save the pose with the prop parented to the figure.

So I load v4, parent the object to her hand, click the Plus sign to save a Pose in the Pose library.  For subset I have chosen everything, just v4 hand and propr and just prop.  Makes pose...

Doesn't actually pose the prop when tested

The routine is:-

Load up figure. Leave in basic pose.

Load in prop.

Move prop into hand using the X,Y,Z Trans using the Rotate options if required.

Once in the correct position, Object menu, Change Parent.

Move down the list to the hand that you want to parent to and click it on.

When saving back to the folder, you will be asked if you want to save the item as a Smart Prop.

Use the Yes option.

Done.

All the best.

you need to save the parented prop as a new prop, it should ask you if you want to save the prop as a smart prop

 simultaneous post.  what LROG said ^

in DS, i never could learn how to save a smart prop.

OK, cool thanks for the Tut!

In DS, in the Content Library, there is the PFE Script (Pose Format Exporter) and it can save out Prop "poses".  Not sure about Smart Props, but sounds like the end result is the same.

Depends what result you are after. A pose, and a smart prop, are two quite different things. When loaded, a smart prop will automatically parent to some specific item, and in some specific position relative to the item (eg a sword in the left hand). If that's what you want, then you need a smart prop. If on the other hand you want to pose the prop (eg apply rotations and or translations) you need a pose file.

Poses for props can be a bit complicated, depending on what needs to be achieved under what circumstances. Basically there are three possible scenarios:

1). You need to pose a prop when it is parented to a figure.

2). You need to pose a prop when it is NOT parented to  figure, but there is a figure in the scene.

3). You need to pose a prop when there is no figure in the scene.

In all scenarios you start by parenting the prop to a figure, then saving a pose, using the 'Select Subset' option to only include the prop in the pose. You may now need to edit the resulting pz2 file depending on which of the above scenarios apply.

1). Is easy. Just use the resulting pose. No editing needed.

2). You need to address the prop as an actor. Open the pz2 file in a text editor. Use the editors Search & Replace function. Set the search string to be "prop " (note the trailing blank space), and the replace string as "actor " (note the trailing blank space). Execute a Replace for all instances of the string.

3). A pz2 (pose) file can only be applied if there is a figure in the scene. So to apply a "pose" when there is no figure in the scene, it needs to be saved with a cm2 (camera) file extension, and put in a camera folder. But first do the step in scenario #2 above.

P.S.
Returning to the subject of smart props. You can only save a smart prop if you don't use the 'Select Subset' option when saving.

@lesbentley - Thanks for the reply!  I took the pose file that PFE made out of DS4, changed the word prop -> camera, and changed the extension to .cm2 and BAM!  It moved....

Unfortunately, the Daz to poser Units are off.

Is there a Daz -> Poser calculation for Translation/Rotation/Scale?  For example, if you translate 6 in DS, what would that be in Poser?

Both Poser and DS use PNU (Poser Native Units) internally. You can set Poser to use PNU as the display units in the Edit menu > General Preferences > Interface tab. I'm sure there must also be a way to make DS use PNU as the display units (though they may be called something different in DS).
