Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Feb 15 11:01 am)
Quote - > Quote - The Genesis exporter has everything to do wth Poser and we should be able to talk about it. Laurie
You will notice the thread is still here. Let's talk away!
Thank you!
Because I'm quite interested in the relevant posts in this thread.
PoserPro 2014, PS CS5.5 Ext, Nikon D300. Win 8, i7-4770 @ 3.4 GHz, AMD Radeon 8570, 12 GB RAM.
Ok, I doubt I will be using it, but it still doesn't stop me posting questions that may be of benefit to others that do:-
So, for those that actually have the tutorial:-
How easy are the instructions to follow?
Are they aimed at a beginner, intermediate or advanced user?
How long did it take you to complete the tutorial and are you happy with the result.
Now, I don't super gushing, "Oh it's fantatic" etc. Give good and bad points, could this have been better, this part was impressive and reasons for it.
For those that want to use this, great, it will solve your problems,
All the best.

It is a set of simple instructions for the preparation, the export and loading of the figure in Poser. It then explains what needs to be corrected to get a good result in Poser. The last part explains the scripts and what they do and how they are used.
Since it assumes a little knowledge of Poser, my guess it would be for the intermediate user who will find it easy
How long the tutorial takes depends on your previous knowledge. Since I already did experiments before, it took me only 10 minutes - mainly to see what was done differently and how the scripts were used.
Are the results good? For what it does - yes. But not all clothing and hair work well and you have to repeat the script after each pose of the genesis figure. Depending on the pose you will get poke through, but that can be corrected with magnets or the morphbrush. That is why I made the remark that the weightmaps might need improvements or JCMs added in Poser
This is not a solution for everyone who thinks they can use genesis just like they use V4 in Poser. There are just too many steps involved.
I am happy that I have a solution in which I can use scaled figures with clothing.

Thanks for the info, I'm sure that as time goes on, there will be an update etc. and improvements added to it, but it does seem as if a solution for those that want to use Genesis in Poser is closer than before.

Many thanks to LaurieA for starting this thread, and to basicwiz for cleaning it up before I saw it.
A couple of updates!
The intro discount was mistakenly set to 30% for just a few days - that has now been corrected, it whould be 40% now for about a week before dropping to 30% for the remainder of the intro period.
This is indeed only a tutorial and a couple of scripts. However, Genesis shouldn't need the scripts running again after reposing unless the joint centers are change (e.g. if you change from "Freak 4" to "The girl 4" shapes). If all you're doing is posing the figure then there should be no reason to re-run the scripts.
This tut was written in part due to frustration in seeing no update to the .CR2 exporter for a while, ANd no update to the existing documentation which left some users floundering. There were far too many comments about Poser not being able to use Genesis, about limitations in Poser that I don't beleive exist, and requests for a tutorial on how to use the current - not original - .CR2 exporter. So it's half frustration at the speed of software development, half frustration at the lack of proper documentation, half an attempt to sort out the myths of what Poser can and can not do, and half an attempt for me to make some money out of the time I put into tutorials (this is my first pay-for tutorial. It's not meant to signify the end of my forum tutorials, but really - I'd like the forum to work better first!). The reasons for creating it are therefore very, very similar to the reasons I created the Figure Setup Tools tutorial on-forum. but with the benefit that I might get something back :)
I've also started a render competition - I'd like us to be able to show DAZ exactly why they should be supporting us Poser users. I WANT them and Smith Micro to actively see Poser users and Genesis users as not being different camps, but just... us. I'm not sure if a linky is permitted, so I'll leave it for now - don't want too much self-promotion!
Cheers,
Cliff
I forgot to ask an imprtant thing. How big are the file sizes? DAZ appears not to put this info on the promo pages etc. any more.
The reason I ask is for those on dial up.

Let me first correct a misunderstanding.
This is NOT a new export tool. It is a tutorial to use the existing one and a description of the additional steps which need to be taken to make it a good figure in Poser - such as adding IK and correcting the shaders. It then adds 2 scripts to adjust the joints in clothing for scaled figures - such as V5, M5, Child, Freak, etc.
To answer your question: The exporter always has exported all morphs which were present in the genesis figure at export time - so body and face dials are useable in Poser
Edit: I see Cliff already dropped in to explain
Hi Cliiff as you are here, can you clear up something that is not mentioned on the Promo pages.
Which version of Studio is this intended for. I know 4.5 is out, but is this for previous versions as well.

No worries.
Files sizes... let's see, the Pc download of the tut is 22,621 KB. Too much of that is the installer (this should improve when DAZ move over to products in .ZIP files) but still the .PDf is about 16.4 MB. It's written in my usual "style" so there's lots of imagery and even a couple of animations. I write these things the way I'd like to read them - simple, straightforward, and (hopefully!) clear.

LROG
It isn't on the rpoduct page? sigh. version 4.5 is still at "experimental, release candidate but we know of major issues" stage. This tut is for the current/previous "stable" release, though I am told the .CR2 exporter is essentially unchanged at this point. I won't inflict early pre-release software on anyone!
Cheers,
Cliff
(PS I also described it as a 46 page or 47 page tutorial - I forget which - but they've bumped it up to 50. I don't count things like a front cover or a contents page as part of a tutorial, but they seem to prefer to count the pages rather than the content. I understand it... I just don't feel it's as accurate, my own little personal POV).
PPS this tut is of NO use to anyone using a version of Poser older than 9 or 2012 because the .CR2 exporter exports a weight-mapped .CR2. It's possible to get Genesis - even as a .CR2 - into earlier posers, but the result is generally not good. I've had some fun with that, thinking about Genesis in MIMIc, but I didn't have a lot of fun trying anything much beyond the head. Posing = nasty nuclear accident victim! ;)
thanks. guess it's worth a try :) especially if it will bring over the Aiko3 and David shapes..

Yup, I'm around and enjoying seeing positive enquiry. While my wife is slightly dissapointed that we seem to have missed erm a section of the commentary, I am not displeased at all!
I hope that the response to this tutorial - which I originally hoped to include a Poser .CR2 and .OBJ with - will prove to DAZ and Smith Micro that there is a large enough interest in Genesis from the Poser crowd to improve the CR2 expoorter and Poser to the point where the tutorial becomes redundant. Nothing would please me more than having to revise the tutorial to reflect IK being included in the export, and improved materials, and so on and so forth. If we get to the point where I have a 4 page document, and one of those is the cover and another is the contents page, I'll be thrilled.
I'm not sure we'll be able to show THAT much support for the idea - but it's (IMO) a worthy enough goal - and nothing says support to companies like the ringing of cash tills! (but renders are very important - Smith Micro won't hear cash registers from this, we need public renders!)
Cheers,
Cliff

Hmmm... odd, no-one else has reported that yet. May I ask what version of Adobe reader you're using?
The .PDF should be using Calibri (though there's a possibility that some Verdana may have avoided the editing stage - I'll try and check on that). I can't think of any other font that could have got caught up.
Can you also try re-downloading the product? I know DAZ are still going through some teething problems with the new site, so I have some small hope that maybe a fresh download might work better for you?

Genesis doesn't work perfectly - isn't as smooth as I'd like (both in facets and in operation) but it's a long LONG way from non-functional. I can't imagine how much effort Team Poser must have put in to accomodate Genesis, or how much has been put into trying to get the .CR2 exporter to make Genesis play nicer with Poser. I shudder to think.
There's still not enough geometry around the earlobes to suit me - ou see more faceting with some other morphs (M5 comes to mind) although Poser can smooth that out to a certain degree. Maybe this will help illustrate the mesh density?

Cliff

It should be possible to go higher res too, for close-ups... but there's a potential for the resolution to exceed the quality/capability of the rigging, so I'd rest that under "experimental" and definately more for advanced users.
Here's soime idea of clothing density - I don't have many clothes, but this was the lowest-poly I could find with a quick look.
