Subject: Windows 7 (64) MC6 to Pz2 question

jjroland ( ) posted Mon, 06 August 2012 at 9:37 AM · edited Thu, 08 August 2024 at 4:13 AM

Windows 7 (64) / PP2012 / Questions regarding MC6 / PZ2 / Library thumbnails:

I am refreshing myself on how to manually change a material file to a pose file.  I am following this tutorial:  http://www.sharecg.com/v/19993/browse/3/Text-Entry-Tutorial/Creating-a-MAT-Pose-Pz2-file-for-Figure-Textures

which I know is a little dated but should still serve my purpose.

Now if I recall correctly, on my old system, when I changed the extension to .pz2 - this changed the file type.  But on this system - the file is still showing as a .MC6 file even after the extension change, although it does come up now in the pose folder of the Poser library.

Question 1:  Is this okay?  Is the file still going to work ok or is there something else I need to do to it on Windows 7 to make it show up as a .pz2 file in this folder?

This tutorial says to change the poser version to 4 so that it will work with earlier versions.  I thought I recalled changing it to 'All Versions' or something like that.

Question 2:  Is it correct to change the version in notepad to Poser 4 or should it be something else?

More than half of my old .png thumbnails for the library do not work anymore.  Including this one.  Instead I have the blank man holding up his hands saying "no preview".  I verified that the .png is in the folder where it should be.  It is 4kb.

Question 3:  Does anyone know why this is and/or what I have to do to make ALL of my preview thumbnails work correctly in the PP2012 library?

You can't edit file types if you have extensions hidden.

In any File Manager, tap Alt to show the menu, then do Tools / Folder options...

In the Folder Options dialog, select the "View" tab. Then disable the checkbox for "Hide extensions for known file types."

Now you can see and change extensions.

I use Version 5, since I always have nodes, but if you have no nodes, 4 is OK. If you say 4 and have nodes, it won't work in 4 even if you say it's 4, so say 5.

With regard to things not showing in the library, are you trying to save things in the main runtime, and do you have the main runtime in Program Files, and do you have UAC turned on? If so, you need to stop trying to put things in the main runtime. They are not where you think they are.

In this case no I am not using the main runtime.  I do have some of the standard poser content in the main runtime, but I have external runtimes on an extra drive.  The previews don't show up for many many of those files.  This one in particular is simply C/runtime/libraries/pose that I just saved to and the thumbnail isn't showing up.

I do believe I have UAC turned off.

This is probably a dumb question, but what is a file manager?  I do not have one of those.  Can I just edit the folder options inside windows 7?

I was able to change the folder option in windows.  Thank you for that tip.  That fixed my .pz2 problem.

The "File Manager" is Explorer. Your file browser. I used to tell people "Explorer" but too often people read that is Internet Explorer and then they get even more confused. Especially since Explorer does not show up in the title bar.

The file browser now called Explorer used to be called "File Manager" in Windows, long ago. So when somebody is confused by newer Windows, I assume that phrase will be the ticket. Guess it isn't.

Here is the location on my PC of the files.

And the image of this in the Poser library.  This is a runtime right from my C drive so that is why you don't see a lable for it.  It was empty when I created it.  All other runtimes in any location have this same issue.

It's always been my understanding that a runtime with no parent folder doesn't work. You say you have the problem elsewhere as well. I don't know what to say to that. Show me the problem elsewhere.

Also, you don't show enough to confirm the two screen shots are of the same location. The library will show the full path in the details panel. I can't see your details panel.

You also have your library titles showing only one line. So I can't tell if the rest of the file name is cut off, or it's actually different.

There's a "1" at the end of your first screen shot.

*Don't let my confusion change anything.  I have a terrible memory so I often just don't remember what is called what.  For this I found it in Control Panel/Folder Options.

Grrr.

I refreshed the runtime and the thumbnail showed up.  The details panel is still showing the file as scrubspants1.mc6.pz2 though even after the refresh.  So that's still a bit of a concern.

I took a closer look at the other runtimes where I have this issue and apparently somehow those .pngs got eaten.  So that explains why they are not showing up in those folders.

Thank you for looking BB.  Seems it was mostly user error.  I imagine that is often the case.

EDIT

*HA - I closed the library window and reopened it and now I have a thumbnail, and it is labled correctly in the details pane C:runtimelibrariesposescrubs pants 1.pz2

You probably have RSR not PNG. Been discussed lots. Poser no longer supports RSR. There are a couple free converters that fix that with one button push, turning all your RSR files into PNG files.

IIRC, P7 is the only version which converts RSR to PNG.

Ockham has a python script which can change mc6, mt5 to pz2.  Works rather well except you need to delete the original files manually.

Look for an RSR converter by Dizzi in freestuff. Works a treat ;).
