Subject: Sizing the document (preview) window

dnstuefloten ( ) posted Mon, 20 August 2012 at 3:10 PM · edited Sun, 21 July 2024 at 11:48 AM

I recently purchased Pro 2010, coming from Poser 7. I like the way it all works--except for the document/preview window. I want to size it the same as the render window. I do mostly video, so this is important. With the preview window docked, I go to Window/Document Window Size, where I am told to float the palette. I do so, and resize it numerically the way I want. And as long as the palette floats, it remains that size. If I dock it again (or if I move the window inadvertently, it tends to dock itself) it goes back to the previous setting (893x550, which I presume is a default?).  Anyway, I'd like to dock the window in the size I prefer. Is that possible? Or does it have to float?

Incidentally, you can see my Poser videos, a long work-in-progress (in conjunction with my new novel), at EvidenceOfALostCity.com...

Docking it means it takes on the space available in the dock, so no that's not a default - it's how much space you have left after all the other docked windows get their share.

You cannot dock the preview at a specific size. I don't know why they did this, but it's always set to use all the remaining space.

Perhaps you understand this already, but you didn't mention it, so maybe you don't.

I don't care what my preview window size is. I set the render dimensions how I want and forget the preview.

If I need to compose my image within the rendering rectangle, then I pay attention to the dimmed letterbox, if any, resulting in the aspect ratio of preview differing from render.

Setting document window size and then rendering to match document window size is the old way.

The new way is to set the render dimension explicitly.

I like this so much that I made a plugin for Poser and I can type or select (or use mouse wheel) the size I want without opening a dialog.

Thanks, Bagginsbill. I guess I'll have to keep the window floating. I dont like the letterbox because much of my lighting is dark, and the box is often hard to see....

I forgot to mention that when the lighting is dark, I press Ctrl-3 or -4 switching to wireframe and then the lighting doesn't matter and I easily see the letterbox.

Then switch back to texture shaded with Ctrl-9.

Or I just keep the document display style buttons ready and use them.

Quote - if I move the window inadvertently, it tends to dock itself

The following applies to PP2012, I don't know if it works the same in Pro 2010, but it's probably worth a try.

From the File menu select 'New'. Click on the small box in the upper right of the Document Window, remove the tick (U.S. "check mark") from the item 'Drag-Docking Enabled'. From the Edit menu, select 'General Preferences', click the 'Set Preferred Scene' button, make sure the 'Launch to preferred scene' radio button is selected, click 'OK'.

You should not have any more trouble with the document window docking when it is dragged.

Here is another tip. Float the window, size and position it as desired. Set a UI Dot. Clicking the UI Dot will always give you a floating document window of that same size and position (it saves all UI elements, not just the document window). If you need to clear a Dot, hold down the Alt key whilst clicking the Dot.
