Subject: OT - Apology to Snarly

moriador ( ) posted Tue, 28 August 2012 at 4:22 PM · edited Thu, 02 January 2025 at 8:46 AM

Snarly works his butt off to make truly helpful scripts that end up being indispensible to users and he gets thanked by having his thread turn into a condemnation of subdivision and a rehash of an old argument that has been happening here over and over and over again.

I'm truly embarrassed that I contributed even a single post to that argument, and I apologize to Snarly for not just ignoring that part of the thread entirely.

I'm fed up. This forum has degenerated into an arena the purpose of which seems to be little more than the rehashing of the same threads repeatedly. When it's not annoying, it's boring.

Can't we just have stickies for Genesis in Poser, Daz vs Poser, Low Poly vs High Poly, and post a warning in the first post: Unmoderated -- Enter at your own risk? Then maybe the people who can't get enough of those particular issues can feel free to discuss them as much as they want.

As is stands, I really wish the mods would just freakin' ban me from the forums here because at least then I would never be tempted to read them again.

Anyway, I'm sorry, Snarly. I love your script. Thank you.

won't work. since those you refer to don't give a shit about the rest of us. they have to be right and rehash the same shit over and over and over, only caring about their own selfish ends.

what it is they have nothing to contribute so have to resort spewing crap look at my  date of joining and post count, love the forums, gain a lot of info from a few of our number, but can't be assed to post because of the shit you might get from an innocent post. Don't know what you posted but im sure snarly will see the real gripers from the ones that had got caught up in the headlights.

Yes the Genisis thing is wearing very thin how long has it been since that mesh was launched. I will end now before i  succumb, and as khai-J-Bach  said they dont give a shit

dont let it get to you bro send snarly a pm if you think you might of offended him

It seems BasicWiz has been able to lock the thread to new posts without removing it altogether? If so, this is good.

Useful info there... it's just a case of mentally filtering out one or two polytical subthreads to read it 😉

nobodyinparticular ( ) posted Tue, 28 August 2012 at 5:31 PM

It was an interesting thread. 'til it started taking on water and certain people felt poking more holes in the hull would improve things. I think this is above my skill level yet.

I didn't participate in the thread but I read a lot of it and found it interesting.  Shame it all had to go tits up.

Echoing other people here, yep, Snarly is a damn good bloke.

The problem is it will have dropped off of page one by Thursday; It should have been a stickied thread like V4WM and Pose2Lux.

I for one am very thankful for Snarlygribbly's fabulous work, and am looking forward to the next iteration of the Subvivision Script.

I too am very interested in snarly's project. I am not interested in the degeneration of a thread I found interesting and informative. We all have our opinions and are welcomed to share them. We are not welcomed to enter threads for the express purpose derailing them. Sorry snarley that such foolishness had to happen. I hope you keep up with this concept and maybe I'll be able to see how it turns out. It is a worthy idea.

Snarlygribbly ( ) posted Tue, 28 August 2012 at 6:51 PM

Ok .. thanks for the nice words guys :-)

Seriously though, no apologies are needed, least of all from Moriador whose posts are always intelligent, well thought out and pertinent. Let's not let this get out of hand.

The thread had run its course and served its purpose. We all got something out of it and I'm happy.

The stuff about Genesis and low poly figures is all valid and worth talking about, just not ad nauseum in every thread, imo. I guess I just got bored, having seen the same pictures posted and the same arguments made so many times. To anyone who hasn't come across them before (somehow) I expect they're still interesting.

Nobody's really out of order, it's just that the enthusaiasm of some people for their particular interests in this hobby sometimes gets the better of them, that's all.

It's no big deal.

I'd rather people be over enthusiastic then to turn up here and find that no-one wanted to talk about anything :-)

Anyway ... cheers, and thanks.

Now we move on.

I can do this, if people think it's important. If I do, I'll probably go through and remove all the crap posts first.

I suspect, however, SG will post an uopdated script before long and will render this thread obsolete.

Anyway, I'll do whatever the group would find useful.

I'm also so sorry the thread went way the wrong direction. I was following as I do other threads, always trying to learn things. Perhaps there will be a new thread. I add your script to my Poser and found where I was supposed to launch it from, but since I was trying it out on a V4, I saw very little difference. I have not used Posette (any version) in a while so I might give it a try on her. I started out with Poser3, and at the time and for a while, I thought that Posette had the nicest body shape. Anyway, thank you Snarly for all you do for us!

Seconded.

Also, Basicwiz, should you decide to keep/clean up the thread, I would certainly not be offended if you removed any of my posts in that thread that were off topic.

I've always liked Possette ,she's one of the origianl CGI Characters .
I always thought it was cool how Possette followed DC comics character creation rules.
Don''t know where character modeling would be with out her.
Think it would be fair to say she's one of the mothers of CGI Characters.
She belongs in a CGI museum.

Any ways Possette was not modeled to be SubD.

I certainly agree that progress should not be stopped on a subject for a distraction put up by someone either intentionally or unintentionally. I thought Snarlygribbly was going somewhere there and I hated to see his progress ended (his stuff is wonderful by the way). However, the ever present concern over censorship raises it's ugly head here in the States at the thought of the deletion of contradictory posts. So could I suggest that instead of deleting those posts that were deemed counterproductive, they be transferred to a new topic thread and reposted there? The poster retains his right to expression of this beliefs, but does not disrupt the flow of the original thread and the progress it offers. I believe I've seen this approach taken by DAZ on their forum. Their moderators reserve the right to move posts to the appropriate location. Seems like a legal precedence...

Thanks

The sanitized thread has been made sticky.

Snarley can open a new thread when progress with his script warrents it.

I did not get into anything I should apologize-but I'm happy to express appreciation for Snarly! Snarly- I've said it before-but you are my favorite Gribbly! :-)

Eric Walters ( ) posted Wed, 29 August 2012 at 1:09 AM

Thanks BasicWiz! There are more than a few BB threads-such as the one where he demonstrates BBglossy-that could use stickiness at some time.

basicwiz ( ) posted Wed, 29 August 2012 at 1:13 AM

Yeah, Eric... the lack of stickiness (and a place to put all the threads that would be candidates) is an ongoing concern of mine.

I could spend a month researching the truly useful threads, but they would run into the hundreds (not counting those for pre-Poser 9).

Not sure how we manage those. The search function obviously does not help people adequately (because you have to know what to call what you are searching for!)

I'm open to suggestions as to how to handle this one. All help appreciated.

Um ... bring back the Wiki?

No-one wants to see a whole page of stickies, which is what you'd end up with. Most useful would be for someone to extract the core information from a thread and put it into a Wiki.

The last wiki was before my time, but I'd certainly second that motion 😉

I'd happily help set this up, and host it myself even, with linkbacks here for reference, for the kudos (and some affiliate bucks...) and I'm sure a few others would also be glad to do that.

But I'm not sure anything other than a new Renderosity hosted wiki would cut the mustard...

...which I guess means Renderosity web dev staff time etc. would be required to do that?

But, maybe setting up a Proof of Concept at least using MediaWiki or similar would be worthwhile? (e.g. to make the case for usefulness and likely user hits)

😉

wiki gets my vote, i've seen so many old threads that refer to the wiki, followed by a "oops it's no longer there"........Also maybe a wiki format would allow help and advice and knowledge to be shared without it resulting in the hijacked thread format that so often occurs.

I was enjoying reading and learning from the threads, before I started dabbling in modelling I had no idea what the implications and advantages/disadvantages of sub division were about, in my book, anything that might give you a boot up the render quality scale is worth supporting and not attacking...

Maybe it's time to rekindle the philosophy of a community run by artists for artists........

Perhaps instead of a wiki, we could have a subforum with a "best  of poser" theme. Something like the backroom might have been. Perhaps it could be divided by subject. One spot for IDL, one for SSS, one for nodes etc.

Thanks for your work on that now-stickied subd thread BasicWiz.

It now reads very nicely as an analysis of Snarly's prototype subd script and the considerations generally around the use of subd, I think 👍

That's possibly not a bad idea, Moriador?

I like the Poserplace idea... there is a "Dungeon" area, with a separate Forum titled "I Hate/Love Daz/Poser and want to fight."

LOL.

I guess the problem is that whilst maybe there could be a separate "Debates" forum or two, of some sort, I don't suppose that will ever in itself stop people getting carried away or passionately fixated about something in other forums and threads.

So, I suppose this is then why disseminating the really good, insightful, inspired, informative stuff, from standard threads, into some form of wiki or "best of" sub forum is maybe more the way to go...

I did not participate in the other thread but I was following it with interest and installed the script. I would just like to add my thanks for everything Snarly has done.

I'm having trouble getting the subdivision script to show up in PP2012 and I don't seem to have Windows Addons as mentioned in the other thread. Without derailing this thread could someone point me in the right direction to get this script working? Perhaps a PM would be best so this thread keeps on topic. Thanks.

first from within poser you add the runtime with the snarly script as an external runtime.  Then you go to your windows menu in poser at the top of your poser window, and there is an addons option at the bottom of the menu that opens.
