I'll leave it up to others to conclude what spinning chaotically head over heels several times a second while falling at 1,000 kph would do with one's physiology, and the G forces involved in that feat.

I found it impressive that they reached that height with a balloon, without burning millions of cerosine....

anyhow. i would go mad if i would have to jump out of a first level window..!! :)

Nice juxtaposition.

A man uses 1770-era technology to perform a high-speed fall, and we cheer wildly.

At the same time, the last piece of comparatively modern (1970-era) technology in our space program is retired, and it's inching through the streets at less than walking speed toward its nursing home.  Snails are impatiently trying to pass it.

Joseph Kittinger dove from a height of 19 miles in 1960, so it's actually been done before, just not quite as high. And when Kittinger made his dive, it was in the same type of balloon as Baumgartner. Even so, it was thrilling to watch, as I wasn't even alive when Kittinger made his jump. LOL.

To add, apparently, an 84 year old Kittinger was in mission control for Baumgartner's dive, which is pretty cool ;). I wasn't aware of that. Of course, I wasn't paying much attention to anything but his actual leap either. Heh.

lets see what he did other than the stunt itself..

pressure suit research with that new suit.. useful for pilots and astronauts.

high altitude escape systems for aircraft and space craft.

medical data on extreme G forces on the human body....

*inspiring peaple to reach beyond the mundane..

so... not that useful at all... no...

I respect the man,
But I honor the team.

This has been a great team effort.
You need them all to do something alike.

I cheered, and respect the team effort.

Yep, two years older than Neil Armstrong. They had an interview with the him and Baumgartner on a few weeks ago.

At gunpoint, I'm not sure I wouldn't rather make the jump than the dive that James Cameron made to the bottom of the bottom of the Mariana Trench though. Either way, you're one faulty seal away from a very messy death

it's an altitude record, but the speed of sound varies with altitude on this planet.  if humans are exposed to the trans-sonic shockwave, they suffer deleterious fx, hence the positioning of the pilot ahead of the shockwave-generating edges in trans-sonic aircraft.  the passengers should also be positioned ahead of the shockwave, but they weren't always so lucky. :crying:

I thought it was awesome.  I have a friend who is a base jump athlete and said he was one of the ones who inspired her to get into the sport.  And yes, it is a sport and full of adrenaline junkies.  :)

It was an awesome achievement. Kudos to Red Bull for throwing it's money out of the plane, I think.

Such symbolic acts can be taken as an inspiration for human endeavour, I hope.

Much needed, if we are to survive, and preserve the ecosystem around us, that we need to do so...

Anyway...

...does Genesis in Poser have a supersonic shockwave morph?

I suspect now it needs one.

No disrespect meant to Tyler, but I think he might come with his loaded by default... he he.

Compared to Vicky, all other human endeavors shrink to insignificance! ... God help me, I do love her so!
