I would not have known that these existed if not for this thread (which is turning out to be oddly lucky for me). Unless it’s prohibited, I don’t see why you don’t put a link to your ShareCG things in your sig – or post one in freebies here with a link in the readme. I’m sure a lot of folks here would love these, but don’t necessarily search ShareCG.

Glad you found something of interest, and so far, that's why a lot of them have survived.  Sharecg doesn't cost anything, so it's not cost, but I see some that have been there for several years and the last three I released have higher downloads in less than six months.

The Shady Nook will be rebuilt, I got lazy and the back door doesn't open, and the service window doesn't either.  There is a real Shady Nook, although how many rebuilds it's been through, I couldn't tell you.  At the time I lived in that town, now called part of the pot capitol of the United States (Mendocino county, Cal) what I modeled was as close as I could remember  The dimensions of the building were dictated by the size of a sheet of plywood, the less cutting, the better.  Build a frame and nail the sides on, throw on a coat of paint, and presto!  A business!  Also where I got the worst case of food poisoning I've ever had.  But that was the time and the location, the location is the same, but the building isn't.

THe school, I look at it now, and think that I was trying to model the school where I attended fourth through eighth grade, and while the building still exists, it's now a home.  I'd like to find a good picture somewhere of the merrygoround we had, that has a lot of possibilites in my particular interest in 3d.  There were times when it was occupied all during the lunch break by the eighth grade, Margaret and myself, the whole eighth grade.  Margaret was older, but the daughter of a migrant worker, in my eyes, beautiful.  Don't know what she thought of the skinny thirteen year old that was sitting with her, slowly pushing the go round, round.  She was sixteen, probably having a good laugh to herself.  It'll be rebuilt, someday, but that one is going to stay there until I do.

A lot of the download counts there aren't accurate, they were there when sharecg made some software changes, the school at that time had over 900 downloads, getting close to a thousand.  But most of them are pretty bad, the way I see it, I hadn't made any scaling tools yet, now I have them and can do a little better.  I'd like to see the school as it was when I went there, red brick, which is now white vinyl siding.  It doesn't look like a school anymore, but enough that I look at it and then at what I made.  Not even close.  And the .obj is a nightmare of mistakes that have been hidden from view.  I'll fix them too, I think.

Being lazy is the reason I don't have a link.

Quote - You'll get there PrecisionXXX ;). This probably won't help, but I've been modeling for over three years and I still really struggle. Maybe by year 10 it'll sink it. Hahaha.

Laurie

I started putting them up some three years ago, no sure of the exact date.  Been modeling longer than that, could be even ten years ago I started playing with it, but in Povray.  Nothing common between Wings and Pov, except Wings will export a .pov mesh.  Nothing will read the CSG of Pov except Pov itself, so I had to start from scratch.  Getting easier, and I'm getting fussier.

Big problem with me is I look at every buidling I drive past, see too many that "I gotta model that".  Of course. most of them never get that done.

Everything I put up with one exception is with no restrictions, only one I ask not to redistribute.  It's an engine lathe, I'm pretty proud of that one, and not really finished yet.  The rest, the courtesy of mentioning the Greybeard handle is requested, not something I'm going to fly off the handle if it's not.  Made for a need, need filled, now I really don't care what happens.  Do it just for fun, there's no other real reason.

""That's great that you can recreate your memories in this way. I'm no big fan og the google capture empire with its roving camera cars erc., but with SketchUP and google earth etc.m future generations will be able to take virtual 3D tours of their old haunts and see them as they evolved.

I assume that the CSG elements you refer to in POVRay are similar in this case to something some of Max's geometry that nothing else will read, e.g. 3D Exploration would read a subset of Max stuff, at least the ancient versions, but not most of it. So I guess you've tried PoseRay which reads POV and INC but:

"PoseRay only reads POV files with mesh or mesh2 objects. Anything else is ignored.
PoseRay will not read mesh or mesh2 files if they have transformations applied."

I know.  CSG= Constructive Solid Geometry.  Povray has a trace function that can be used to generate a mesh, but you'd be at it forever with something like even a small cabin.  I have exactly no knowledge of the internal workings of Povray, but if I could somehow figure a way to take their texture codes and use them to create the textures for use in something else, that would be wonderful.  However, that falls under the "nothing else understands Povspeak."  Poseray lets me take figures from Poser into Povray and that works pretty good, generate a terrain complete with trees and brush in Povray then import the figures.  Basically I'm kinda lazy when it comes to scenery, and using some routines from those that know what they're doing, I can randomly plant, scale, rotate and mix different types of trees, with no limits on how many I put in.  Twenty thousand isn't even an unusual number for a large scene.  The same trees, they're generated in a java program, exporting either Pov or obj, three of the obj into poser and it's gasping and dying.  Don't know how pov handles them differently, but they do.  Same as with Poser though, the more that are in it, the more shadows it's calculating, and you might start tonight and come back next week to see what it looks like.

I have a collection with over 130 cameras, most of them in working order.  Repaired cameras for some years.

While the debate here has now dried up, I'm still getting a lot of feedback via email. Which has led me to reach a conclusion. My idea of rewarding supporters with unique freebie items just isn't very popular. You folks like your freebies to be freebies, no unreasonable restrictions, no BS. So I've decided thats how it'll be from now on. Mine will be free range freebies :) Talking of which, the model that was going to be the 1st reward is now totally free. Details of which are here as link above..

I would have seriously tried the idea, before dropping it..... we all want stuff for free and we will give you a hundred reasons why you should keep them free, after all we're all looking out for our own interest :-)

One thing that hasn't been mentioned I think in this thread, but perhaps I overlooked it, is the poserworld/poserstyle model. Pay one flat fee to get in for a certain time or lifetime and download after you're paid your subscription. I kind of love that idea and if you've got a server running or are with a host that allows enough traffic, that could work.

Artwork and 3DToons items, create the perfect place for you toon and other figures!

Due to the childish TOS changes, I'm not allowed to link to my other products outside of Rendo anymore :(

Food for thought.....

Well.. As for the Paypal donate thing, I have gotten quite a bit of money from it over the years. Sometimes with very large intervals, but from time to time someone drops me $5 or on occasion even more :) And I appreciate that and of course I take the time to write the person back. Least I can do :)

I've made lots of freebies by request, sometimes as a sort of speed challenge. I've been out of the whole 3D loop for a long time now, but most of my freebies were made just because I find it fun to model something. Like doodling in a way. If whatever I was doodling came out ok, I found I might as well share it. And since I've always been amazed at "things that do something" - I throw in morphs whenever it's suitable. I don't animate much, but I have fun running the morph and watch the thing move on my screen L I'm easily intertained ;)

So my basic reason for making freebies is because it's fun. The reason I make relatively few for sale items is that all the quality testing bores the heck out of me. That, and making promo images. If I could stick to the modeling and poserizing, I'd be happy. So it's not that my freebies are shite (well someo f the older ones may be L) but they just take less time, there's no need for oodles of promo pics and the quality testing/betatesting.. well I check that it works and unzips correctly. That's about it :)

You just can't put the words "Poserites" and "happy" in the same sentence - didn't you know that? LaurieA
