The object has many materials - you're not looking at the one for the box. Look at your last screen shot - it says Material: hull.
While you're in the material room, find your box in the preview window and click it with your mouse. The material that controls whatever you clicked on will become the active material in the material editor. You should then be able to figure out how to switch the image.
FYI: You have a manual in PDF form - would help you to have a look. Check your Help menu.
Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

Yeah I said that was an example of what the main ship looked like with image map nodes. I was expecting something like that for the cargo box.

A-ha! This was very helpful. In the "Material" dropdown, I didn't have 'car1' selected. Problem solved!
Sorry I didn't read all your post. I stopped after "So evidently none of those settings are pertinent."

select the item you want to change the texture of.
go to the material room
select the advanced tab
from the pulldown menu select the material you want to change
look for the Image Node attached to diffuse or alternate diffuse and check that it is what you want. '
In the Image Node filename parameter click that and select your new image file
The preview image should show the new texture.
For future use save the material while in the material room , or the material collection for the figure/prop.

I'm working with this model, bought here on Renderosity:
http://www.renderosity.com/mod/bcs/index.php?ViewProduct=95050
The cargo container/box comes in the red shade with the logo, as shown. I want to make some custom ones.
So I look in ...RuntimetexturesSpaceTrucker02 per the docs and there's a variety of JPGs there. One looks exactly like the red-colored box in the promo art.
I take that JPG into photoshop and dress it up the way I want, and save it under a new name.
Now...how do I "apply" it to the fiture? I thought this would be in the Material Room, but maybe not. I'm using Poser Pro 2014.
When I load the prop (the cargo container) into Poser, it comes in with the red JPG already applied - looks just like the promo art. But I can't find where that is specified.
Here is what I see in the Material Room for the prop:
So in other words, with THOSE settings, it's giving me the red box with the logo. So evidently none of those settings are pertinent.
I look at the main ship model, I see image maps and nodes...but not for the box:
I just can't find where I would change the JPG that's being used. I admit I'm a novice in the Material Room. Maybe it's somewhere else?
It did come with a UV templates .zip, though I haven't looked at that.
At the moment the prop's parent is UNIVERSAL - setting its parent to the main "space truck" figure didn't make a difference.
Been reading the reference manual but haven't found anything yet...
