Subject: Request Motion Capture recommendations

ringer33609 ( ) posted Mon, 19 August 2013 at 6:28 AM · edited Mon, 27 January 2025 at 9:11 PM

I want to use motion capture to save me time creating fight poses.  Since I'm not creating animations I don't need a top-end system.  Any recommendations out there for a system that is relatively inexpensive and reliable?

I've tried FastMoCap for the Mac and Kinect and found when running OS 10.6.8 it crashes within a  minute or two of launch, so please include the operation system you're running and any hardware considerations that matter.

Thanks.

Motion Capture Assistant perhaps? Don't know.

Usually I'm wrong. But to be effective and efficient, I don't need to be correct or accurate.

visit www.aRtBeeWeb.nl (works) or Missing Manuals (tutorials & reviews) - both need an update though

probably be best to ask about motion capture at a high end CGI fourm.

Chances are that you don't need to replace your software but to replace your Kinect: There are several models of the Kinect, and a number of programs using the Kinect only work with the first Kinect for XBox - they will fail with a Kinect for Windows or the second revision of Kinect for XBox. I made that experience first hand, and the symptom on OS X was for me a crash after ~30 seconds.

The compatible version is a Kinect for Xbox 360 model 1414 - that's the one you want. I have a newer Kinect for XBox model 1473, and that causes many programs to crash. You can find the version of your Kinect on the sticker on the bottom of the Kinect.

Stewer,

Un-freakin'-believalbe...

Ya, sure enough, I've got the 1473.  Thanks very much.  The specs said I needed a Kinect for xBox, but who would have guessed it had to be an older model.  Think Amazon will trade me for an older model?

BTW: The thing that really ticks me off is that the makers of Fastmocap didn't respond to any of my three requests for assistance.  No even a "we don't know what's wrong".  At least Paypal was able to get me my money back.

So now the question is, do I get the older model and try again...  Hmmmm...

Ipisoft motion capture uses kinect and seems to work pretty well, I tried it and brekel (sp) and it worked better than that.  Both are PC based solutions.

Problems I have had is the "missing limb flail" issue.  if your sensor(s) cannot see a limb the software assumes it is flailing around in a one arm attempt at flight.  This can be solved by using two kinects or just being very aware of where the limbs are.

It is reasonably accurate.  If you want really precise, you will need a higher end system and maybe a cool suit.
