Subject: Particles and animated Ocean

arrow1 ( ) posted Sat, 28 December 2013 at 6:20 PM · edited Sat, 11 January 2025 at 12:49 AM

I tried learning Blender a couple of versions back and found it difficult. With the new versions is it worth giving it a go again? I mainly want to import objects mainly boats/ships and animate them on an realistic ocean with spray. Is this possible in Blender? Also is there particles such as smoke and dust? Cheers

Blender is not going to be an easy program to get ones head around until the interface changes a bit, which given the resistance by established users, is unlikely to happen anytime soon. However, there are excellent no-cost resources around to help you get up to speed... my go-to one would be CG-Cookie's Blender Basics. > Quote - I mainly want to import objects mainly boats/ships and animate them on an realistic ocean with spray. Judging from your signature, your system should support the ocean animation addon that comes default with the latest version of Blender: it just needs to be activated in Preferences-> Addons. AFAIK, there's work being done currently on volumetrics that will produce brilliant smoke, dust and clouds... have a look at the above link to see what's available already.

I agree with all that Robyn has said but it is worth a try again to learn Blender even thou the UI still needs some further development tweaks and improvements it has come a long way from pre 2.5 which was a nightmare to learn for me at least. The newer releases do have much to offer and your systems does sound like it will handle what you wish to do. And there are many free resources for learning it as well.

Good Luck

file ~ user preffs

or ctrl+alt+u

blender can do pretty good smoke and water effects now BUT can be slow and hard work

dynamic paint can do realistic wake effects BUT still takes lots of time and practise

(some "effects" have to be done in BI, but cycles improves on every build so thats only a temp set back)

I'd sugest you learn some basic modeling first just to learn the ui an find the tools you will need for the fancy stuff

unbroken-fighter ( ) posted Sun, 29 December 2013 at 4:29 AM

it would help if people knew the actual version that you are using since the newer versions have features that even the generation before it did not have

I have downloaded the latest version.Blender 2.6.Many thanks for all your replies and patience.Cheers

Hi Everyone. What a magic tutorial.Even I understood most of it.It is the best step by step tutorial I have ever come across for a 3d graphics software program for a beginner.Cheers

also on cgcookie there is a citizen tutorial on animating the UVs

its on the main page of the site based on a lava floe

One more thing. In Blender is it possible to animate a torpedo running through water and at the other end a ship  being blown up by the torpedo. I know I am getting ahead of myself but it seems one has to use and learn several software programs to achieve one goal! Cheers

Hello arrow1

Yes you can simulate torpedo running thru the water and make show it making impact and even exploding. I know Heddheld posted a sample image of using the lattice modifier showing like a bullet hitting a wall in this thread http://www.renderosity.com/mod/forumpro/showthread.php?message_id=4125263&ebot_calc_page#message_4125263  and I am sure there are tutorials in a number of places that can show a workflow of creating what you want with just Blender. Personally the fact that you are looking ahead to things you want to try is what will drive you to learn Blender it is really a multi faceted tool for doing so many things with in 3D

Good Luck
