Subject: Medievalesque male clothing + dagger

Believable3D ( ) posted Sun, 05 January 2014 at 6:11 PM · edited Wed, 20 November 2024 at 6:29 PM

I'm a self-publisher and book designer, and I'm writing a novel that is a "medievalesque fantasy"—i.e. something like medieval times, but not real countries etc. The main character is associated closely with his dagger, so I want him holding one on the cover.

A search on the Rendo marketplace doesn't come up with anything under "dagger", but perhaps someone knows of something along those lines in a larger weapons set?

I also need to figure out what to do clothing-wise. Because it's a fantasy, it doesn't have to be completely realistic, but I don't want pinup/tramp sort of fare either.

Like I said, this is for a male character.

Thanks to any who can point me to appropriate products.

What type of dagger?  It would help if we had a better description.  Tossing out the generic term "dagger" might get you anything from a 2" bodice dagger to a 10" Ibarsi.  There was an older set over at DAZ called Questor Knives, but I don't see it there now.  You might check around and see if anyone knows where they went.

Thanks, cedarwolf. I don't have a super-specific idea in my head, but clearly not a 2" one! :) I want something that looks medieval and small enough to be worn e.g. on the inner thigh, so obviously not something better described as a sword, but nonetheless big enough to be considered a genuine battle weapon.

And here I see a problem with your story already. You say your character is closely associated with his dagger, but you can't describe the dagger itself. Once you nail down that little detail, it should be easy enough to find an appropriate blade or even have  someone make it for you.

What makes the blade so special and distinctlive that it brings this character to mind?

As for Clothing, I know that DAZ has several medieval style outfits, but  the ones I know of are for M3 and M4. I haven't really kept up with anything for Genesis.

Here's some general Medieval male clothing being worn by M4 in this book cover I was working on in this thread.

Mortem Vetus has a good set of swords at RuntimeDNA. You may be able to scale these down to the length you want. Traveller also has a set called "Blades" at RuntimeDNA that could be scaled. Look at the set called "Blades - swords of power". There is a dagger there. These sets are quite inexpensive.

Thanks, guys. Will check those out.

EClark, no it's not a problem with the story. The association is not of the sort that variations in look are going to affect either the characterization or the plot. There's another element involved that I won't go into here.

Looks like the Mallonglar variation of the Swords of Power should work. Morphs into a dagger, and looks like something a prince might use.
