I am working on a Crusade Era project involving oar powered ships (Viking type and Galley in the Med). I need to have the oar rotate in three directions but not move from its origin which should be fixed to the oar lock (hull). The hard part is getting the oarsman to his oar as a part of the rowing process.

Ideas?

Oared ships had a number of fixed relationships based on the human body's dimensions.

Benches and Thwarts from which the boat was driven were 3'6" aparyt (1.2 meters) which is the spacing between oars. The Thwart or bench was typically 18" from the floor.

The ratio between the length of an oar inside the oarloack ranged between 30%-40%

The part that I am working on is that the most popular rowing styles in modern depictions would either sink the boat or break the backs of the oarsmen.
