Subject: "This is not a vailid Poser file"

basicwiz ( ) posted Sun, 23 November 2014 at 7:25 PM · edited Mon, 27 January 2025 at 11:58 PM

Recently, I've been having a problem crop up where items that have worked perfectly well in the past are now failing with the announcement "This is not a valid Poser file."

Sometimes re-installing the item from the zip straightens it out, sometimes not.

I cannot be sure, but think it may be connected to the last SR.

I am running Poser Game Dev 64 on Windows 7 64 bit.

I re-installed Poser to no avail.

Opinions? Advice?

Also, I have been unable to save anything from the Pose screen to the Characters folder. Upon reloading the save, I get the above error.

I AM NOT using External Morphs.

Not sure this helps but I have Poser Game Dev SR5 and like you I am running it on Windows 7 64bit.  I have not seen the problem although I doubt I have tried saving from the pose screen since the update.  I have just tried it now and it seems to save and load without a hitch

I use Poser 13 on Windows 11 - For Scene set up I use a Geekcom A5 -  Ryzen 9 5900HX, with 64 gig ram and 3 TB  storage, mini PC with final rendering done on normal sized desktop using an AMD Ryzen Threadipper 1950X CPU, Corsair Hydro H100i CPU cooler, 3XS EVGA GTX 1080i SC with 11g Ram, 4 X 16gig Corsair DDR4 Ram and a Corsair RM 100 PSU .   The desktop is in a remote location with rendering done via Queue Manager which gives me a clearer desktop and quieter computer room.

I got a few of those errors. They were corrupted files in my case. My hard drive was going south. Haven't has issues with saving files.

I'd back up your stuff and do a disk check and surface scan...

Turns out I have a Samsung 840 series that has known issues along these lines. Just ordered a replacement.

Thanks for mentioning that Doug. I was just about to get a Samsung 840 series ssd that's on sale right now. The reviews on newegg are pretty high, but I keep hearing about the extremely high failure rates of ssd's, regardless of brand, even tho they've been out for a while now. Think I'll stick with the classic spinners for now.

This is the first SSD I've had trouble with, and I own six of the beasts... some over two years old. First hickup. I would encourage you  to move in that direction because they are lightning fast.

I have had an SSD for close of four years now and the new ones should be better, most of the brand ones come with a three or five year warranty.  That said they do have a finite life and I have my PC set up so the SSD loads the OS and programs but all the temp files are moved to a conventional drive to reduce the numbers of writes to the SSD.

Same here, Hornet.

For those who followed this thread...

The problem was, indeed, the Samsung 840 - 256Gb SSD.

I replaced it with a like-sized Critical SSD and all of my slow operations and errors magically disappeared.

Thank God for backups!

That is one to keep in the back of the mind.  I did not think of the hard drive at first and most people say that an SSD is there on minute gone the next.
