What other programs are there that are like Photoshop? I have Gimp, but I don't like it at all, and I don't understand or know enough about the new way that Photoshop is done now. I used to have Photoshop 7 on my old computer, but lost the installation disc so I can't install it on my current computer.

Paint Shop Pro might work for you.

Another Free alternative which have started using and experimenting with recently is "Firealpac" and "Krita" both these are under active development and seem to have some potential even thou I would say GIMP is still perhaps the number one alternative to Photoshop yes there is a bit of a learning curve but worth sticking to.

 I prefer Photoshop myself but a friend of mine uses Irfanview. It is a basic image viewing program but there are a host of plugins available to allow it to do more. Oh, and it's free.

You could have a look at Serif Photoplus which gave me a good start when it came to starting with Photoshop. I say this because the program construction is very similar. I would give the node to Paint Shop Pro if I had to give up Photoshop.... I've used Paint Shop Pro for quite some time in the past and it made an very easy transition to Photoshop....

i've been playing around with SumoPaint (it's browser-based) on my Chromebook and i've had fun with it. i've also been using Sketch (mac), though it seems more geared towards vector work (i use it for a lot of UI work...)

Another cheap (inexpensive) alt is Pixelmator (mac/iPad) - (sorry for the MAC alternative as that's my work platform of choice ;) )  

It really depends on WHAT you want to do ... if it's more for color-correction, that's one thing, for creating textures is another...

 Adobe just like Autodesk spent the very lax regulations of the last decade and bought up all the competition so their prices went waaaaaaay up. So there's the free programs that are not as powerful or as easy to use. Or you can save for those programs. I would recommend while saving up take community college course in Photoshop and any other program you are interested in buying. I got lucky and had a car slam into mine going fifty while I was waiting at the light and I got a big settlement. Otherwise I would still be using Bryce.

Serif is very good, and in my view does some things better than Photoshop (although I only have PS11 as my highest). I have gone off PS because of the new licence system they have adopted, which is a shame because there are some very good features. I prefer to buy a program with no strings attached, but even if you do not wish to use the monthly payment scheme the only alternative seems to be an annual licence. Given that many of the functions never need to be used, it is unnecessarily draconian.
