...or "The sorry State of Poser/Daz Hair Shaders"

Hi

I was wondering of there were any projects in the works for  improving poser/DAZ hair here in the age of free PBR engines that now rival Mental Ray & Vray.

While it seems to ,me at least, that the prevailing obsession is joint bending realism

I am at a loss that there is not more vocal demand for hair shading system that does NOT remain firmly frozen in the vestigial Era of Curious Labs Poser4.

And Please... This is not a Poser VS DAZ issue as the majority of the Hair Sets Sold at Daz Still use that same basic transmap system pioneered by the venerable "Kozboro" you know..back when my , now teenage, daughter was born and ,many are not even as good as his was.

(Notable mention to Mindvision GDS& Aeory Soul whose "Actual hair" &"Ony braids"

look quite real in A physically correct engine like cycles& Iray)

Bagginsbill recently posted some images of a blond haired figure in his "Smart IBL" thread and the hair utterly murdered any chance of realism.

While we seem able to keep up with advances in rendering on the matter of Skin textures Hair has been left woefully behind IMHO.

:-) Sometimes I find myself applying Shaderworks AM Toon shaders to transmapped hair. Sometimes it makes them look better to the brown eye.

Too often we see a very nice render with super skin, with a hair line that looks like clumped mascara.

Cycles can do decent hair.

The only thing I know of at the moment is the hair that comes with Sixus1's Scarlet.  It is certainly a step up from "Helmet Hair", although I am still feeling my way around it.  Daz has a "See My Hair" thingie that certainly looks interesting.  I only use DS to export .duf content, so I have kinda ignored it.  ZBrush has a fiberhair thingie that I will get around learning how to work - my ZBrush-Fu is weak at the moment.

There has been a few threads bitching about the lack of styling tools for the hair room over the past few years.  Part of the issue may be that everyone was traumatized over the Hair room when Poser 5 was released and never went back into it.  I know that it would bring my system (maxed out B&W Powermac G3) to it's knees when trying to use it or the cloth room.  I ended up dumping it for a G4 right before the release of Poser 6.  And dumping the G4 for a G5 right before the release of Poser 7.  It wasn't until I got a 1st Generation Mac Pro (and Poser Pro 2010) that I could really start to use the other rooms in Poser.

I don't think there has been a lot of work done in it since Poser 5 - and won't be until we start asking for improvements via SM's Support System.

I would certainly welcome improvements to the Hair Room, but at the moment I don't know enough to know what to ask for.  I need to work on that.

DS has these. http://www.daz3d.com/garibaldi-express-hair-system-for-daz-studio and http://www.daz3d.com/look-at-my-hair

Don't know if they are PBR compatible. Too be honest I have both but haven't really played with them because I am too lazy. For me, Zbrush fibremesh is easier to use, and renders nicely.

Also these changes transmap hair appearance for the Iray engine. http://www.daz3d.com/uht-hair-shaders-for-iray and http://www.renderosity.com/mod/bcs/oot-iraypair-hair-shaders-for-daz-studio-iray/110302/

Would be nice if something like this happened though:) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVQax6olpUQ

Flocking, mate, flocking, you should look-up how to make a flocking applicator on YouTube and use it on your head with fibers that match your hair colour.
And don't mention it, I'm full of good ideas ;-)
