Subject: Please remove the new fixed header and footer

bagginsbill ( ) posted Mon, 17 August 2015 at 6:43 PM · edited Mon, 18 November 2024 at 9:41 AM

I am very displeased with your new fixed header and footer. I have a hard time as it is with your space wasting layout. Now I can't even scroll it out of the way.

I have TWO GIGANTIC emtpy rectangles left and right which you are free to feel with junk I don't want to see. I'm trying to read threads here, not your menus and your facebook + twitter + youttoob + google links and your extra reminder, in case I forgot, that I'm at Renderosity and being extra stupid I can't remember that so you put it at the top and the bottom.

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

Sorry, this new design is a TRAINWRECK!!! Not very user friendly at all...

Latexluv ( ) posted Mon, 17 August 2015 at 7:28 PM

This is a horrendous change! If you're going to insist on these headers and footers, make it so they can be collapsed out of my way. I have a 17" laptop monitor, and yet with these fixed headers and footers, I now have a narrow band only to view the forums. I also absolutely HATE what has been done to the Freestuff section. Are we making this site for millenials and their bleeping smart phones???? A Most Wanted and Trendering section! Trendering???!!!! I'd like to add some more bleeps to this statement. And you still cannot search the Freestuff by Software. I once had in my preferences to see Freestuff that was Poser Only and could search DS if I wanted to. Now you can't do either. You have to click on the item to see if it is compatible or not. These are not good changes! Roll them back!

I completely agree. I am software developer for web applications. The header and footer take up too much space on my laptop. It's been my experience that when someone designs this when they forget that most people do not have 28in monitors.

LaurieA ( ) posted Mon, 17 August 2015 at 8:13 PM · edited Mon, 17 August 2015 at 8:17 PM

Agreed. Trying to read the forums on a landscape laptop monitor is a miserable experience. I have about 5 inches of space between those two bars. At least give the option to collapse them and expand them only when we need them? (which expansion for the bottom bar would be absolutely never as far as I'm concerned). The bottom bar especially is wasted pixels. No reason you couldn't have put the links to that social crap under the Community tab. Most of us are just going to hide those links with NoScript and AdBlocker anyway ;).

Yes, I agree. On my small monitor, with res of 1600 by 900, valuable space is lost. Due to eyesight, I will not set the resolution higher.

ssgbryan ( ) posted Mon, 17 August 2015 at 9:19 PM · edited Mon, 17 August 2015 at 9:20 PM

Yeah, I gotta agree on this.

I am guessing no one at 'Rosity has the money to purchase a widescreen Monitor.

The stupid...it burns.

On the other hand, they do seem to have fixed my issue with the notifications.

I would personally love to put the guy who originated the wretched metro-style that's been overused everywhere online and in OSes in a room with the entire walls are affixed with speakers playing Justin Beiber...for about a day or so, I'm not a sadist after all ;^)

For what it's worth, you can get rid of the top and bottom bars with AdBlock. I got rid of the bottom bar entirely. I left the top one only because it's the only place where the start thread link is and if I hid it, i'd have to open it every time I wanted to start a new thread. If they could just make it collapsible that would be perfect.

EDIT: it's not the only place where the new thread button is, so I did delete the top bar too. MUCH better :).

Collapsible would be awesome. :) Some of us need the functions in the top bars at least.

On a widescreen laptop it does feel a bit crowded! I would definitely prefer numbered pages on What's New/Hot etc, instead of the infinite scrolling which feels sort of slow and could be a problem for people with RAM memory restrictions. It would be shame to make everything except the first page stuff less accessible.

The product pages are definitely an improvement! Much better than before. :D

@Frequency

The top forum bar is redundant and you can get rid of it. There is a Mark as Read button and a New Thread button at the top of every forum page, so you don't need it. If you block the forum bar, the bar in the MP still works for what it's worth ;).

@4220035 @ LaurieA... Can you please explain what to disable with Ad Blocker (I'm using Firefox) to get rid of the bottom footer? I tried earlier on my own (never used it before) and wound up with a totally nonfunctional Renderosity. So I had to disable it until I can find out more...

Go to the AdBlock icon in your top bar in Firefox. Click the small down arrow to the right of the icon and choose "Select An Element To Hide" or Ctrl+Shift+F3. When you select it and hover over parts of the web page you'll get red rectangles around things. Hover over the bars until you get a rectangle around the whole bar and click. Select "Add Element Hiding Rule" or something similar to that. Agree to everything after and the bar will mercifully disappear ;). You can do that for any element on the web page that you don't wanna see.

@4220647 @ LaurieA. Thanks. Last night when I tried, it made the site non-operational. I'll have to try again.

Might help to remove any filters you already have for Rendo first and start fresh ;).

I had to update Adblock first to find that option. Selecting the whole bar with it and then pressing 'S' removed it. Thanks LaurieA!

@4220916 "Might help to remove any filters you already have for Rendo first and start fresh ;)."

This app isn't very user-friendly. Do you have an idea how to clear filters set for a site? Sorry to bother you again.

I think that if they make the white bar not fixed, would be better.

tiggersprings:

Go to the arrow next to the icon again and click it. Choose "Filter Preferences". Choose the "Custom Filters" tab and, when choosing each type of filter on the left, delete anything on the right that has the rendo address in it by right clicking and choosing "Delete".

Thank you, Laurie. I got it with your help. Much appreciated.

At least the footer has been nixed, thanks to whomever got it taken care of!

3-DArena ( ) posted Wed, 19 August 2015 at 4:43 PM

Personally I like the fixed header. The forum buttons in the header actually aren't redundant. The ones in the forum pertain to the forum you're in. The ones in the header pertain to the entire community. To start a thread in different forum now you can do so with the option in the header.

Looks like the footer has been fixed. It now appears only when scrolling down to the very bottom of the page. Much better! :)

@4221220 - the space taken to achieve that, though is excessive. The buttons are too large and the header has too much dead space. The same thing could be achieved in less space, even on a header that stayed at the top all the time.
