Subject: HELP! Poser stuck - just beeps / pings?

mmitchell_houston ( ) posted Sat, 30 December 2017 at 9:44 PM · edited Sat, 21 December 2024 at 8:07 PM

I've been working on a simple scene in Poser Pro 11.1. Old installation. Nothing new. Been working fine for AGES. SO! No suggestions or questions about recent installed product or other nonsense, okay? And it's running on Windows Pro 10. And no, I don't recall exactly what I was doing when it "froze" or "locked out." I may be been using the Morph tool, or I may have been adjusting the fit of some jeans on M4 with a parameter dial. Nothing weird or unusual.

Program has been running fine: no stalls, no problems. Suddenly, I can't select ANYTHING. Every time I click on a ANYTHING I hear a "beep" or "ping" noise. I can't select the two-figure simple scene. I can't select the menus. I cannot select the Product Library, the Hierarchy Editor. Shortcut keys are not working, neither is the ESC key.

I feel like there's an unseen dialogue box open waiting for me to click it, but I cannot find it.

I've tried using WINDOWS+ARROW to move the Poser window around (it moves), and ALT+TAB. But cannot see anything hidden or unexpected.

ANY IDEAS?

Sounds like a hidden dialog box. Because it's part of Poser, Alt-Tab won't bring it up...
I hesitate to suggest hitting enter, but Control Z should undo it if the dialog box does something really bad!!
Should I say.... not will or guaranteed!!!

WORKAROUND FOUND: Thanks, donnena. You were right about it being a "lost" dialogue box. I searched for that term, and after reading a bunch of stuff, figured out this workaround, but it might not work for everyone.

  1. In Win10, I clicked on the "Poser" icon which is pinned to my taskbar.
  2. There was a list of recent documents there.
  3. I picked a recent document and then Poser responded by asking if I wanted to save the current file.
  4. I responded "Yes."
  5. The current file saved and then the older file opened.
  6. At that point, the program was "unfrozen."

I have now gone back to my original document and everything is working fine.

NOTE TO PEOPLE WHO DON'T HAVE POSER PINNED TO THE TASKBAR: Try going to your file browser and select an old file manually. Maybe that will give you the same response that I had, and let you get back to your work again.

Thanks to all for reading.

Mike

I have definitely isolated my particular problem to an event that is happening after I try to change how many viewports I have open. If I am very fast, the program will freeze. If I click slowly and wait for the pop up to open, I can avoid the issue. However, if not, it will lock on me and I will have to save the file in the method described above, then close the program through task manager, and then reopen it. Fortunately, this save the last version of my file so no work is lost.

Yes, I have found if you try to work too "fast" it sometimes freezes Poser. Possibly because of the refresh rate of the graphics card. Sometimes if I'm impatient and I try to rush things I actually crash the laptop! But I can boot it back up and all is good.
