I'm a fan of buying used high end computers. I have been using a Dell Precision T5500 for rendering. I picked it up for around $500 around 3 years ago, maxing out the ram to 96 GB took it to around $800. It has dual quad core Xeons, and I put a 970 video card in it. Well that one is still going strong, but I really wanted to be able to set up a second machine since I can't do much on it when a render is running. So it was time to go back to E-bay to see what looked interesting. Picked up a Precision T5610 with dual 8 core Xeons, 32 GB of ram, and a 1 TB SSD for $800. Got a 2200 Quadro for the video card, 4 GB of ram on that for $179, and a 4 GB Western Digital NAS box for another $179 so I can use a common library between the two machines. So now I'm going to be happily busy if a bit broke for a few months ;)

That sounds great! You'd have to really know what you're looking for.
