Subject: Propagate change to a material to all instances of the material in a scene?

I have a material that's applied to multiple objects in a scene. When I edit and update the material, I would like the material changes to apply to all instances of the material in the scene. This does not happen.

I used Vue about 5 years ago and I thought this is the way edits to materials worked, but it does not seem to be working now. Is there a setting for this? Thanks.

Walther at e-on helped me figure it out. My mistake was that I was editing materials by selecting the object and opening the editor from the upper right, instead of editing the material from the material summary windows (F6). Working fine now.
