Looks like the 2k versions of their HDRIs are free, however you have to give them info to sighn up for their page to get them. Anybody do this yet? What was your experience with them?

I signed up with them, had no problems downloading what I wanted for free. They relatively leave me alone, no harassment, no unwanted ads from them. Pleasant experience.

Try HDRI Haven. All free. So far the largest resolution I've seen on there was 20k which was between 500-600mb.

I have HDRI-Skies listed in the Content Directory. Checked it out the other day. A the bottom of the page, there's a link for how to download for free.

The link will take you to another page where they will give you instructions. The third one says this:

How do you tell? This isn't the first time I've seen people make this claim. I've gotten a lot of hdri's from many places and have no idea if they are what they claim.

The higher the resolution the better if you intend to use them for both lighting and background providing that you are using a ground shadowcatcher. Even for just a skydome background you still need a decent res. Generally, 3k to 4K should do a satisfactory job. ATM, anything over 4k in P12 sets off a warning but the map will still load. Until they fix the problem, we'll need to deal with it. HDRIs can be generated from LDR images (i.e., jpeg) in a variety of ways if you have the right software. Unfortunately, HDRShop is no longer available, it was an excellent app to over-/under-expose an image and then combined to generate an HDRI. It's a hack but it's a great way to take a hi-res jpeg and use the image and light data in Poser.

You can technically do it in any app that supports setting exposure values. Just need something to merge them together. I don't personally create HDRs out of single exposure images (I prefer tripod+DSLR and creating the ev steps in-camera), but I know Affinity Photo can do both. Use the develop persona to create something like -4, -2, 0, 2, 4 out of the original (which would be the 0), then use file > hdr merge and import them all there.

I wouldn't call it "garbage" but it certainly is the lowest Quality and don't forget, it's free. HDRI-Skies quality does go all the way up to 20K resolution, but you WILL pay for it.
