Subject: Poser 12 library "Favorites" question

davo ( ) posted Thu, 19 August 2021 at 1:01 PM ยท edited Sun, 10 November 2024 at 6:58 AM

I'm slow to move to poser 12, I'm still using poser 11. I tend to "wait and see" for a while before making the jump.

I do have a question about Poser 12's library system. In Poser 11, one of the items that seems to be requested when referring to the library, is to be able to add an entire folder to the Favorites section without actually having to add each and every individual item one at a time. Does Poser 12 have any kind of upgrade when I can just point to an existing folder and tell it to add the entire folder to the favorites?

Thanks for any input into this. Davo

Not sure that it's possible. The Poser's "Favorites" tab is a sub-directory of Poser's Content runtime, whatever the version, and actually, under Windows, it cannot recognize a shortcut to another folder. Either an error that diserves a ticket, or a missing feature, indeed.

I very often use symbolic links. Even with Windows.

Thank you Y-Phil :-) A missing feature indeed. It's the little things like this that would be a meaningful update. Much times it seems so much energy is put into upgrading things like superfly and materials that the little helpers like this get overlooked.
Cheers! Davo

adp001, you might be onto something I'd be willing to try. So, lets say for example I want to add this folder to the favorites:

C:Program FilesCurious LabsPoser 5runtimelibrariesDavoLabworks 2

How would I put that into the MKLINK syntax?

MKLINK /D C:Program FilesCurious LabsPoser 5runtimelibrariesDavoLabworks 2

When creating this link, does it have to be created in the collections folder directly?

I have dissected the Favorites Tab through the browser and this is what I have found. The folders can be created externally and placed into the Collections folder that is associated with the Favorites tab in the Library. When you use the Library to create folders and "save" content to them, what Poser does is creates a new thumbnail from your original install and a shortcut to that specific content. This method preserves the original locations of your content, making them easily accessible from any runtime in you may be in the Library. The Collections folder resides in your Poser 11/12 Content runtime, don't go searching for it within Program Files and I wouldn't link anything from there unless you are running Windows XP. I have created folders within the Collections folders and transfered content in and out of them. I've managed without any major problems.

You can't add a shortcut of a entire folder into your Fav it will give you an error! You also need to be careful by adding linked fies into the Fav folder these will remain permanent in the folder, meaning they only can be removed by accessing the folder directly, if you try removing a shortcut through the poser internal library it will NOT remove the shortcut it will kill your original file. The best solution for the Fav is to access it through the Explorer by adding a copy of the folder with the files into it, this way it will work just fine to add entire folders and you will stay out of risc loosing original files by trying to remove a fav link through the Poser library. In short terms " Only manage your Favs through the Explorer and Not through the Poser Library " Adding Fav's is not a problem but for sure removing them.
