THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Need Boolean Help!

AgentSmith ( ) posted Thu, 17 May 2001 at 7:19 PM · edited Mon, 06 January 2025 at 12:04 PM

I understand Boolean in Bryce(4.1), no problem. But, here's my problem/question; can only Bryce-native objects (sphere, cube, lattice, etc.) be used in performing Boolean(in Bryce)? Here's the scenario...I import a grouped set of five .dxf letters. I ungroup the letters and make them negative. I then create a sphere, and make it positive. Put the objects together, give all the same .mat, and group'em up. I want the sphere to look as if a word was cut into it. But, what happens is the letters dissapear and the sphere looks normal. I've tried MANY variations, but to no avail. And, yes I have made the letters out of a lattice, and it works...but looks way too crude. Thanks for any help. AgentSmith

If I remember correctly, yes you can. but you have to be sure to hit the little 'solid when booleaning' box in the edit dialog box for the dxf objects. the 'E' button on the right side. Regards, -Matt 3D Commune Art School Moderator http://www.3dcommune.com

You wont notice any change in the nano preview per se, but when rendering you will.

Look for ElFont, it creates OBJ files, which work great in Bryce & other apps for this.

The doctor says I have way too much blood in my caffeine system.

Yeah, Elefont is definitely a great program, and the best thing about it, it's free... Go to this site to download the program... http://www.armanisoft.ch/webdesign/elefont/elefont.htm Go to my site above to see it in action... :)

Ok, aside from the above tips, and the render solid is a good one, there is another oddity I've run into when grouping... You may have to group the sphere and one letter then make that group positive, then group it with the next negative letter and make that group positive, etc. Don't ask me why, I just had to do this a few times in order to get the right effect. Never had a problem with boolean on imported objects or terrains, or lattices, etc. Also, use the trackball a lot and the centering tool to make sure you're xyz positions are indeed what you want.

First get your lettering in the way that you want as a group and position it in the solid as much as possible, with just a little bit for you to see the lettering... The un-group the letters... Now make each letter negative, making sure in the attribute box you uncheck "transfer material of negative boolean" and as Matt suggests above, in the E box, make sure that the "solid when boolean rendering" is checked... Then group the letters with the positive solid and group.. And you get the effect you want... I did this lettering with elefont and it took me like 5 minutes to do the whole thing... :)

Man, I was looking all over my manual (frantically), I obviously missed it, it certainly wasn't on the four whole pages devoted to Boolean-ing in there. THANK YOU!! (It works) Yeah, actually it was Elefont that I was using in the first place, sweet little freeware. Thank You, again! AgentSmith

Well, glad that you found it in the manual after all.. But it was fun to do the exercise... :)

All it was, was the "solid when booleaning" Button that had to be clicked in the "E" edit dialogue box for the .dxf's. Thanks to Matt "DigitalArtist" from above for that. But, thanks to all of you for your help, really appreciate it. AgentSmith
