Subject: Figures loading in wireframe style instead of textured

Doc000 ( ) posted Wed, 03 May 2023 at 10:53 AM · edited Thu, 30 January 2025 at 6:59 AM

I've got some older figures (mainly hair) that I use from time to time.  When I load them, they load in wireframe, not textured...which is the document setting.  The only way to get them to show textured is to change each individual part; the figure completely ignores document and figure settings.  Not a huge issue, but definitely annoying.

I seem to recall a thread (not sure if it was here or another webstie) about this issue a long time ago and a solution, but for the life of me, I can't remember what it was.  I don't remember if it was a Poser setting or something that needed to be edited in the file itself.

Anyone know/remember how to fix this?

It depends on the kind of hair: some are not characters but objects, so that you may have to change the setting at this level

Right, I get that.  It's a hair figure...it has body parts.  It's only the random really old figure where this happens...most hair figures load in textured display, as they should.

As I said, I remember this problem being bought up before, but I can't remember what website it was on or what the fix was.  I can't remember if it was a setting in the program or something that had to be edited in the file to make load properly.  I vaguely remember it being a file issue but can't be sure.

I remember posting about this a long time ago. I believe someone posted a script that would change all the styles. I'll see if I can find the post.

I don't see it here. I'm afraid it might have been on the SmithMirco forum

I appreciate you looking for it, but I think I figured it out.

I started poking around the cr2 and found the problem setting.  Apparently, years ago, whoever made these items chose to write the wireframe setting into the cr2 file.  Maybe earlier versions of Poser were more forgiving on stuff like that? I don't know, but after going through the file and replacing all instances of "wireframe" with "useparent", the item will load with the proper display setting.

It looks like forcing the item into wireframe display via the cr2 will completely override Poser's ability to change it via the Document display setting or the Figure display setting, at least with Poser 11.

Which hair is it? I'll take a look in my runtimes to see of I have it.

Well, they're both pretty old.  It's the A3 Ponytail and the Girl Ultimate Ponytail (and all of their other figure versions).  Those are 2 I use fairly often, but the problem also affects other figure hair from DAZ from that era.

Indeed: I've retrieved an old one that refuses to obey to the figure style: LotusHairA3, except if I delete it and I reload it immediately, it's only after this that the figure's display settings is respected.
That's something we can sometimes see with clothes, too: if they don't conform correctly, delete it and reload it.

Probably something buggy from Poser at the time.

I tried doing that...loading it, deleting it, reloading it...on 4 different hairs from that "era":  A3 Ponytail, A3 Lotus, Leah hair, and Girl Ultimate Ponytail.  For the first 3, it did seem to work...they would reload in either wireframe or some other display style, but I could acutally change the style to textured and it worked.  But there was no effect on the Ultimate Ponytail...it still loaded in wireframe and could not be changed. Probably something more going on with the settings in that file.

I just chalk it up to being the "wild west" early days of content creation and not having any real standards when it came to making the files.

Open the cr2 in a text editor

Do a search for 'displayMode'...

In each instance change entry after displayMode from WIREFRAME to USEPARENT...

USEPARENT indicates the UNIVERSE in the scene hierarchy, thus the Document Style, which is the parent of the Figure. So Document Style: (choice) Figure: Use Document Style

The nomenclature for displayModes in Poser library files are...

Yeah, I think maybe you missed my post where I said I poked around the file and found the setting I needed to change.  I appreciate the list of tags so other people will know what to look for.  Thanks!

I just chalk it up to being the "wild west" early days of content creation and not having any real standards when it came to making the files.

IIRC, this was because Poser's preview display would slow down significantly with mashes that used a lot of transparency maps, especially dense meshes like hair. But it's not really an issue these days.

I don't know, turning on enhance multi layer transparency in preview render tends to make things pretty laggy. Apparently others have experienced similar...

AmbientShade ( ) posted Sat, 06 May 2023 at 1:06 AM

Ah, yeah I see. I usually keep mine off but set to actual and don't get much of any lag. With enhanced on it is a bit slow but nowhere near as bad as it was 10 or so years ago. I just thought it due to my ancient 970 gpu.

Still tho, pretty sure that's why hair cr2s were hard coded to wire frame.

And 'mashes' lol. I need better glesses.

hborre ( ) posted Sat, 06 May 2023 at 7:42 AM

It has been mentioned in the past that the enhance multi-layer transparency will cause a program lag.  But, then again, at one time when you wanted to pose your figure, it was recommended to use the box view to prevent similar lags in response.
