Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Feb 05 2:05 am)
yes to all (cept truespace, cause i dont know). you can import into bryce, though texturing is a bit hard (for me at least), but there are tons of tutorials. michael (just bought) and victoria (cant afford yet) are two characters who have a shitload of morphs , more than you'll ever be able to find. michael is 60 dollars at daz3d, but if you put kane15 in the coupon field then you get 15 bucks off. the only problem with these two that i know of is that just buying the figures dont come with any hair/skin/clothes. you can use default hair, though you may have to scale a bit. i dont make skins (cept for adding tattoos or scars), but i'm almost 100 percent sure that you can use photoshop or whatnot to make yours. also if you do any modeling in autocad or 3dstudio or so, you can import them. hope this helps.
Am I able to create my own people without additional software You cannot create meshes for new characters within Poser. So I guess the answer is "NO." But there are free/inexpensive mesh programs for this. But perhaps "your own people" means just new morphs and textures for existing characters. Then the answer is "YES." Photoshop is fine for making textures, transparency maps, and such.
Mi Marc,
I have found that Poser integrates very well with both Bryce and Truespace. I do all my modeling in Truespace. Saving in COB format I use 3DExplorer to convert to OBJ for Poser to import. Whilst this program is no longer free I find that it is well worth the money. Another very useful (and free) utility that will perform the task is called Compose
For texture work I use Adobe Photoshop. The full version of Poser comes with the texture templates which will aid in the creation of your own custom skins/textures.
Clothing... yes we do clothing. Although judging from some of the posting, the lack of it is more likely the case :)
Poser figures have several facial morphs to allow a wide variety of expressions.
The new Michael and Victoria figures are higher resolution Poser models with greater detail and flexibility. Well worth the money but not essential if you are just starting out.
You are able to create your own characters by customising the existing Poser models (and by loading any third party ones), but Poser is not a modeling application. You can not form new mesh with it.
I hope that in some way this answers your questions, welcome to the world of Poser :)
Poser isn't really a modeling program for making meshes... although it comes with primitives (and there are various free sets you can add) and you can build stuff with scaled and rotated primitives. Export the model as an .obj into UVMapper and run with it. (This is good for simple stuff.) If you buy the ProPack, you can take your simple model (say a chair) and add something akin to bones, for animation purposes. HOWEVER, it is much easier to model an original mesh in just about anything else, and essential if you want organic curves. Poser's strength is its ability to pose and animate people. Some artists are making movie-quality people and hair. You will find a wealth of clothing, props, backgrounds, textures, etc., in these Forums... as well as some very helpful people. Many sites have tutorials. Carolly

I have a ton of basic questions regarding Poser 4, and I am very appreciative for any help that someone could lend. I just downloaded the demo of Poser 4. I might purchase it but can not seem to find a whole lot of documentation. I would like to incorporate Poser figures into Bryce or Truespace. Is this possible? Am I able to create my own skin and body and hair textures for models in Poser? What about clothing? Am I able to change facial/body attributes within Poser? What is the deal with "Michael" and "Victoria". Are these just like model presets? Am I able to create my own people without additional software, or with Photoshop or Truespace? Thanks againfor any help!!! Marc
