This was actually the type of image I was after when I went out yesterday morning...

I like this. Interestingly enough, I was shooting some mist/fog pictures this morning, but mine aren't as successful as yours S. I've become totally enthralled with b/w almost to the exclusion of color for the moment. I like very much how this pulls you down the tracks and they disappear into the mist around the corner.

Alpha, would you be opposed to include camera/lens/settings?? It would sure help me understand what you've done and how (a bit) S.

No problem Diane. I was using a 28MM f-2.8 Nikor AFD series lens. On the D1 there is a difference between the focal plane of the CCD when compared to a film based camera like my N90. This effectively gives the lens about a 42MM focal length. The image was shot at f-11 with a shutter speed of 125 manual focus-camera in manual mode. The reason I chose this was due to the overall brightness of the scene. Even though there was a fog the sun was staring to burn through it. Once I had the image on the computer, I converted it to grayscale and then to duo-tone in Photoshop. The duo-tone I chose was Pantone Warm Gray 8 CVP. I then conveted the image back to RGB and tweaked the levels a bit and dodged the area in the lower left using the dodge tool set to 9% for the shadows only. Man... I didn't realize I did that much. Anyway I hope this helps :)

Beautiful image. This is the kind of subject matter I find myself looking for all the time. I really like how you handled this shot. What part of the country or world are you in by the way?

I am in Geneva New York, USA. This is a semi-rural area in the Finger Lakes region of upstate NY. Geographicaly, it is a fascinating place with a truly diverse landscape.

Thanks much Alpha. This is a help--to see how you handle different situations even if I don't have the equipment to do part of it, I may be able to 'work around' or something, but at least I see how you approached something.
