Subject: poser smoothing boxy stuff

I've noticed when I import an object in Poser I've made in max, and if it's boxy, u know, corners and straight edges, Poser'll smooth the hell outta it ... is there a way around this? If not I'll do my rendering in max and spare myself some ulcers. Just wondering why it happens, and how boxy stuff can b protected from being smoothed by Poser. Thank u .........

heyas; poser smoothes the heck out of everything. you can't make it stop. however, there's some tricks to getting sharper edges. er, i dont recall most of them, but here's an easy one to try! open your max thing in uvmapper (er, well, it has to be an obj at this point) and hit... um... i think its tools:split vertices. it only works across the whole object, so if you want some smooth and some not.... :/ (steve might be updating that.)

Ok thx ...ok I'll look in2 it, the info must b out there somewhere, and if it is, I'll find it and post it here, as a reply.

In Lightwave, you can make sharp edges in Poser by selecting the surfaces you want to have sharp edges and using cut and re-paste them back into the object. In 6.5 you can also use the unweld command. In Rhino, apparently you can make your edges co-planar by using the fillet command, if I recall. You'll have to ask some Rhino user for specifics on that. Regards- Lemurtek

Yep I went looking in Deja news ... there was a thread about this, and somebody noted that the box prop in Poser has SQUARE faces, and the Max has triangular faces. And they referred 2 a thread here. I found this so far: http://www.renderosity.com/messages.ez?Form.ShowMessage=74591 I should get into the habit of searching messages here before I open my yap. :)

Poser needs an ability to specify a minimum smoothing angle like Bryce has. Until then, in the geometry file unweld any edges that should be sharp.

Unwelding is one trick, but Lemurtek was on the right track. Apply a very tiny chamfer to your edge. Something that you'd have to zoom to see. This will fool Poser.
