Subject: Help with shadows...

I have been trying to get realistic shadows in Poser but all I usually get are blobs of black that don't look right. Could someone give me some settings for realistic looking shadows? Thanks

A light in Poser has a dial setting for the shadow map size (named Map Size and located just below the Shadow dial). I haven't played around that much with it, but I think that increasing the shadow map size will even out the black blobs. At the cost of rendering time, of course.

Yep, dial up the Map Size to 1024 (that seems to be the maximum), and you may also want to turn down the Shadow (density) a bit so the shading isn't so dark. Even so, you may find that the shadows are shifted off-axis a bit. When I want better light control, I take the Poser model into MAX.

I normally turn off shadow casting for lights 1 and 3, and up the map size to 4096 on light 2. Double click on Map Size dial to get the parameters settings, and there you can change the max map size.

pssst... "Shadow Cams". They define the scene area from which each of the shadow maps is rendered. Often, 90% of the area rendered to your shadow map (and hence 90% of the pixels in your shadow map) is not included in your actual image rendered. Zooming and dollying these cams to cover only the part of the universe in your final render can yield the same effect as increasing the size of the shadow map without gobbling up the additional memory and render time. Manipulating the Shadow Cams also allows you to control other factors affecting the shadow's density & diffusion and edge feathering.
