latly I started so send some of my own works to freestuff. the problem is that most of sites hosts does not allow the option of getting into my site through a link, so the images never show on the free stuff, and download is unavialable. can anyone help me and recomend me of a host that does not block the option of remote loading? (sorry for the spell mistakes, of course :-) )

Unfortunately most free sites do not allow remote file posting, and some that do have even started changing that policy. Most of them will allow for 256k file sizes, though that's hardly useful to any of us here, since our files regularly top 3 or 4MB, some even 12MB. I have yet to find a free site where I could post files and link images to the forum. All the files I post are on a paid site. I'm going with BizHosting.com for my hosting, since they have good file size and traffice limits, as well as a free merchant account with the Value service - $17.95/month, $14.95/month if you pay a year upfront. Not a bad deal considering you have a merchant account included so you can take credit card orders on your site, and it comes with shopping cart system. Really easy to setup too. And their tech support is great. To compare, I did this about 2 years ago using a 3rd-party merchant account, and shopping cart software, which ended up costing around $80/month for the hosting and merchant account. And the shopping cart software was $1500 in one shot. BizHosting is a MUCH more affordable option! Hope this was helpful, even if it didn't point you to a free site that allows large files. Good luck, -silver

you could try aol hometown, all you need to get some space is have a free AIM account. that is unless they canged the rules too.

I use Tripod because they have 50M of space for free. Now in freestuff you can link to the webpage not just the file. Also Renderosity is gonna start hosting thumbs for free stuff.

Wadus - what is the monthly throughput limit at Tripod, assumming they have one? Just curious. jon

And I didn't do anything, and they wrote something about violation.

jstro you mean like a bandwith limit? I'm not sure I'll have to check it out. Tho I doubt my freestuff would be popular enuff to reach it lol

You can register a domain name for $35 a year at catalog.com but it has some limits you may not find acceptable. It has a 20MB disk space limit and a 1/2 GB monthly traffic limit. Those are the down side. On the positive side, you get your own domain name with no advertisements, pop-up or otherwise. If you can live under the 20 MB limit it might suit you. Of course they have other more expen$ive plans as well, but with those you also get a store. As an aside, there have been a lot of complaints lately about sub par stuff showing up in the on-line stores. Well, as folks find it harder and harder to get free or affordable web hosting it only follows that they are going to start to try to recoup their expenses by selling things that probably ought to be free. I wanted to keep all my stuff free, so it was important for me to find a cheep web hosting service. If I was paying 17 or more bucks a month I could not give my stuff away. But I digress. If you have large texture maps then the $35 plan at catalog probably won't suit you. But if you are just starting out and have only a few things you want to host, then it might fit the bill. Or check out their other plans. Yep, Wadus, I meant bandwidth. I was not sure if the 1/2 GB per month limit on catalog.com was reasonable or not, so I'm curious for comparison's sake. When I was setting up my site I asked around about these limits, and was advised here that neither were probably enough. So I'm keeping a low profile until I get a feel for how much traffic it generates. So far, it's been so low that it registers as ZERO in their statistics! LOL! jon

Please check out www.superb.net's U-virtual hosting. $9/mo (if paid 1 yr in advance), $20 setup, 50 MB web space, 2 GB throughput, 5 pop3/imap accounts. You get the usual trimmings--CGI/Perl and all that. i've webmastered 4 sites with them over the last 4 years, and haven't had a day of trouble. Excellent customer service. If you want a domain name--that's the usual fees, not specific to a host. Ya gets what ya pays for, but i think SuperbNet (hosts my cooltuna.com site) is well worth it.

Wadus ( ) posted Sat, 22 September 2001 at 7:48 PM

jstro I checked the tripod site and didnt find anything about bandwidth limits...I'm sure they have one tho...my pot and pan in free stuff had 175 downloads since 9-15-2001 and I havent heard anything about bandwidth from tripod, neither have I heard that someone couldnt download them. If that helps any.

There is a spot on the upload form labeled URL. If you put your website URL in there. Then upload it to the freestuff section. People visiting the freestuff will be able to directly to that page and download your items. I'm not sure if We've started hosting the thumbnail pics yet. But even if we don't. You can still put a discription in there that will give us an idea what's on that web page we are going to go to. Let me know if this works ok. It was added fairly recently. ScottA

Too bad I did not know about SuperNet back when I was looking. Thier U Virtual works out to $108 a year, which is about the top of what I felt I could afford. On the other hand, their U Basic works out to $36 a year, and is not as good a deal as catalog.com so I don't feel too bad about how things worked out. I was looking for limits more on the U Virtual plan though. jon

ScottA thumbs are coming, it was posted in Forum News I think.

Jon, SuperbNet is not the very cheapest out there, i'll concede, but i have totally loved their service, and they are extremely nice Canadians. Gotta love 'em. We're currently being abused by Earthlink, which bought up our DSL contract with CapuNet, and good customer service (which Earthlink has NOT got) is something i treasure. Mud--er, Earthlink, have been complete pigs about the switchover. We can't get a straight story out of them... oh, i shouldn't get started. Grrr. Sorry.

I've been host shopping for a couple of months. One problem you will have is that because R'osity gets soooooo much traffic is bandwidth. I've found few places that offer accounts with unlimited bandwidth for fairly low cost. www.quickimpulse.com (Good throughput fair service) www.under-host.com (Packed with features, spotty CGI support)

Nan, Mindspring-Earthlink seem to have gone on a buying spree for the last year or so at least. They got my ISP also, but I think they probably almost got paid to take it. The point is - they are suffering from the results of guttony. I would bet chaos best describes their organizational model right now. Check out their web site. It switches between Earthlink and Mindspring page by page. I think they are going to wind up Earthlink, but who can tell now? I think the situation is - grow or die, so at least there is an ISP and it is not AOL. The tech guys on the the middle of the night are nice and they are helpful.

You might want to check out this one too. Much more disk space than catalog.com (50MB) and the same throughput limit. Costs $96 a year. Don't think it includes domain name registration though. Earthlink/Mindspring swallowed up my ISP too. I had trouble with the conversion and could not get any technical support (the lines were always busy) so I dumped them and went to DSL. I have never regretted that, so I guess they did me a favor! jon
