Subject: ??? Is it possible that a prop can never have a bump map?

laetia ( ) posted Wed, 17 October 2001 at 1:17 AM · edited Thu, 30 January 2025 at 11:44 AM

I have this weird thing happenning... I loaded a character into Poser (.cr2 file) which includes a prop attached to the figure. I did NOT texture anything yet, but I set a bump map for the prop - that's all. If I render (with the proper options turned on) my bump map never shows up.... I applied the same bump map on the rest of the figure and that works very well. The strength is set to 100% so I should see it, no? Why won't thing bloody thing accept a bump map?!?!?! Anybody has any idea? Thanks! Caroline (...I was angry so I started this project to calm down, now instead, I'm raging mad...!!!!!)

sounds uv related, this would be a good qyestion for philc........wait in the render options did you uncheck "use bump maps" cause if you did then you wont see them in the render...........

Yes wgreenlee1 is right, check your render options. If they are ok then it may be because the prop started off life in DXF format. DXF can not take textures just material colours. The solution in that case would be to export the prop as an OBJ, run it through UVMapper then import it back and parent it to the figure again.

Thanks so much for your help! :o) The boxes are checked as they should be. I guess it could have been a dxf - I didn't make the thing so I haven't a clue. ;-) I'll give the exporting thing a shot, thanks for the quick explanation!! Cheers! Caroline

Even obj's downloaded from the net may not have a UV map. As Phil says, you can still export it as obj and remap it with UVMapper. Sometimes the UV mapping on a prop is screwed up and UVmapper can be used to give it a new one. You can also use 3D Exploration, a not free utility, to change the format of a prop to obj and map it. Exporting a prop from Poser often alters the internal heirarchy of the prop.

The inernal heirarchy doesn't get screwed up if you export it as a morph target(no world translations ) though, does it? I have never had this problem, then again I usually run everything through UVMapper to verify correct UV's anyway...so, nevermind.
