DAZ posted a good tech tip but I hate reading things. I like pictures, figures, and diagrams. Please look this over and give your comments. Thanks. I'll post it to the tutorials section.

you have an m on the end of rsr in the hand pile. Other than that, it looks like an excellant diagram for us "read-the-docs" challenged folks! :) A couple of things though, drop the stuff on the bottom left to a new section (the stuff starting with .obj, PM2, etc) and add that PPP users don't get the rsr files either, they get png files for the thumbnail. Also, since you are on the subject, you might show how to edit the cr2 or other files to change the path in which the obj is stored (for those folks, like me, that are REALLY in need of more things to do and so they tend to change where the clothes are stored etc.) Great job so far! Newbies have a devil of a time understanding the file structure, I know it took me eons to figure it out!

thanks Petunia, i use PPP and forgot about the .png files. I do have .rsr files hanging around in addition to the .png mostly from free stuff i've DLed.

I didn't understand it at all. It look like you added an extra folder on each category?!

raven ( ) posted Fri, 19 October 2001 at 10:58 AM

Ron, I believe those 'extra' folders on each catagory are the submenu folders, ie, Characters -> People, vicki, michael, clothing etc

The idea is that as Raven Said to convey the idea that you put most of your stuff in subfolders under the main library headings. but if this is confusing I'll try to rethink it. mainly i'm just trying to make it look like it would in Windows Explorer. I don't have a Mac or access to one so I don't know how the folder structure looks there. Also I think the design is a bit too buisy. I wanted to get it on just one page but that may not be possible.

OK, if you want to show what a screen looks like, use a screenshot. Look at the attached example. I have some better ones, but I had a computer problem and am not sure how soon I could find the other screenshots.

Hey, that mac isn't too unlike our windows explorer... and looky at all the directories under the main catagories! Looks to me as if our Bill Gates liked mac stuff hehehehe... Anyhows, the file structure depiction that you did is fairly certain to be apt for both macs and pcs, Jamball, and I thought that it was very readable as such. We need more opinions from both mac users and pc users, I think.

"Legend has it" that Bill Gates befriended the guys who created the Macintosh, and ripped them off.....Well if I understand correctly Microsoft owns a piece of Apple now? The screenshot I posted is actually from PowerDesk Utilities file manager. I never could stand Windows Explorer. They left out too many good features like copy, move, etc. Or if they are there, you have to stand on your head to make them work. So it's Powerdesk Utilities for me, always. (Besides PowerDesk has so many other features, including built in zip capability, etc.)

Well, i didn't want to put all those subfolders in there. It's way too buisy and they are different on every machine. I have like 30 subfolders under Characters alone. And all those icons. ugh. I want to show where the files go without haveing to explain what explorer or the Mac analog or the PowerDesk analog is. Obviously I started with a screen capture and took it to Photoshop where I moved things around. How would any of you show the subfolders ?

ronknights ( ) posted Sat, 20 October 2001 at 9:30 AM

OK, what I did awhile ago was this: I took screenshots of the default folder structure. Then I illustrated how some folders could be added due to installations. I showed how some folders would be added to geometries, characters, props, textures, etc. The key here is the ability to show screenshots of whatever state you're illustrating. That isn't easy unless you have screenshots of the default setup, then make screenshots for any changes you wish to illustrate. I think I may have those screenshots still around...but am not sure. I got to the point where I stopped trying to save stuff to CD and finally just fdisked my drives so I could regain control of my computer. (After the virus I got.)

Jamball, I think MOST folks would "get it" the way you have things, really.
