Subject: Pose Directory Problems - 3rd try for help

dcasey0284 ( ) posted Sun, 28 October 2001 at 9:47 AM ยท edited Tue, 04 February 2025 at 8:41 PM

Just FYR, I tried filling out the "Tech Support" request form AND the "Customer Service Form" (several times. After going through all that, when I hit the submit button (there isn't one on the CS page that I could see) nothing happened. So I will submit this to the group again and see what happens. Here is the text of my message to Curious Labs: Is there a limit to the number of subdirectories within a given category (Figures, Pose, Props, etc.). My primary problem right now is that I have some 300+ subdirectories in my Pose directory. I cannot access subdirectories beyond a certain point (for example, once I get into subdirectories that begin with "S" or "T", the subs won't open and it reverts to a sub-d higher up the list). I've been able to consolidate other directories that were giving me the same problem, so it has to be related to the number of subdirectories in each category. With other categories, the problem is not so difficult because files generally don't have the same name. In the Pose category (directory), however, it is difficult to consolidate these directories because so many files have the same name (01-fem, for example, or similar names for pose groups for different characters like "statuesque"). I tried putting subdirectories under subdirectories (like all the MAT file directories under "Victoria", but I get an error message saying the *.pz2 file cannot be opened, so I've had to go back now and move all of these "grandchildren" back to "child" status of the Pose directory). The MAT capability is wonderful, however it has now created a huge number of additional Pose directories, thus further complicating my problem. I've been through the forums at Renderosity about this and gotten little helpful advice except that it seems to be a problem for others as well. I also note that many people have named their subdirectories starting with a ! or a + sign. Could this be causing a problem? I read an article written at Renderosity recently by one of your staff about consolidating and reorganizing the directories, which was helpful. However, with the Pose directory it continues to be a problem. Can you verify whether the number of subdirectories is limited? Or offer any suggestions on how to address this problem? And while I'm at it, when I click on the "handle" on the right of the screen to open the categories and then click the little arrow to select a subdirectory, the width of the window that pops out is not wide enough to read all of the entries. "Victoria Clothing MATs", for example, usually comes out as just "Victoria", which can be a problem if I have five or six different subdirectories that begin with that name. I've sent a suggestion to you a while back about improving this system, but got no response. That's OK, because I absolutely love this program and I'd rather you spend your time making it better. Right now my primary problem is accessing those Pose subdirectories that are far down the list. Just one more suggestion: develop or purchase a program like the P3DO Explorer and incorporate it into Poser...with drag and drop capability! Now THAT would be something! I hope you can help me with my primary problem. I'm using PPP with VUE4 and Bryce5 which makes PPP the premier character development program, IMHO. I use 3D Studio, but have abandoned the Character Studio in favor of PPP. Thanks you for your time. Sorry this is so long, but it is a frustrating problem. Mahalo! Any ideas or assistance would be appreciated. If nothing else works I'm going to have to create a temp directory and move 50 or so folders out of the Pose directory and then swap in and out as I need. Sounds a little foreboding. Thanks in advance for any help. Doc

Ok, i never reached the limit(Whatever that is). Make sure your HD is defragmented on a weekly basis. Second, I now archive everything related to a product, then unzip into Poser dir only when i need them. P3D0 is perfect for doing just that!! Also, you can rename the "MAT" pose files from ".pz2" to Hand Poses ".hd2" safely! That should clear up your Pose dir a lot, since we normally don't have as many Hand files! As for the Names being too long, i never install products into the Poser Dir! I always cancel the "Search for components..." message from the installers & choose another "Temp Dir". Then i rename folders to my liking, check if everything is there, then transfer to Poser dir! I like to have control of what goes on my putter! ;-) Basically, all you need is to find a "Filing" system that works for you! It took me 2 weeks to reorganize all my files the first time! Well worth it!! IF you are using win98 or winME, then that might explain the limit of the dirs... Also, if your "Swap File" or "Page File" is not allocated enough Mem on your HD, then that will definetely affect Poser's performance! It should start at a min of 1 gig! Hope this Helps! Marco And always submit your ideas or suggestions! The worst that they can say is no...

hrmmmmmm... what I did to reduce the numbers of directories was: Using P3DO Explorer, moved simular poses into the same directory.. renaming as neccessary. as an example.. there's a Dance-Modern, Dance-Classical, and a Dance-Wierd sets.. into which all the dance poses go into. then there's one for Dragon, fighting-[style] etc... I think if you walk through the poses directories you have there'll be a bunch with only 5-10 poses in them.. I think the smallest ones I have are the MAT pose directories with about 30 each... heh heh.. THe Dragon POse directory has about 275+ poses in it... I"d be completely lost without Yarp's excellent programme 8 )

dcasey, P3dO has Drag and Drop capabilities. It is not as perfect as the one in Windows but it should be enough to fullfill your needs. As Wizzard and Viomar said I suggest you organize your Pose files yourself - outside Poser - and use P3dO to copy them back when you need some. I'm currently thinking on a new P3dO Plugin which will Copy-To (does already) and Copy-Back the files once you've done the job. "PC Installer" plugin is scheduled late December or early January.

Viomar & Wizzard, Thanks for the tips. I think you're right. I'd already considered the Temp Dir idea, but now I just have to find something that works for me. Wizzard, you're also correct about some directories having only 5-10 "poses". I guess I'll have to just go through and reorganize. I'm using win2k, 3 80G drives, dual 933mhz, 1G Ram. But I've got 300 subdirectories in my Pose directory (all the others are less than that). I think the limit must be about 250 or 260. It seems once I get down to there everything works OK. I hadn't considered how many files are in each directory (and still don't know if that's a factor) but I just know with that many poses in one directory it takes a while (!) to load. Thanks again for your assistance! Doc
