Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Dec 23 7:38 pm)
For several months you could pick up a free, full issue copy of Strata 3D on many of the CDs attached to computer magazines. It will allow you to build pieces in the necessary formats; however, before tackling clothing, I suggest you read one or two of the tutorials on making that clothing conformable. Its not an easy task.
I hate to say this, but we're (MAC people) are out of luck. There is NO good FREE modeler out there that I have come accross and that I would reccomend. I have been searching since 1985. I have bitten the bullet and purchased many Mac programs out there because of this. I now use Infini-D (what it was before it was Ray Dream), Carrara and ZBrush for all my modeling. Well I just dusted off ZBrush again and plan to work with it again. I even tried using PC emulator software to use some of the many free PC modelers. But that was just too slow. Sorry, I hope you get a positive answer, I'd like to know also. ;-) James Oh and YES UVMaooer is for the MAC, it's not so much an earlier version, in that it doesn't have a lot of the perks. I.E. Vertice selection, and auto grouping.
There is/was a free version of Amapi available at Eovia & or some 3Dmagazine Cd (don't recall when). Also Pixels3D is free and is a great modeler, animator. It dosn't export obj so requires some macinations. Meshworks is a shareware modeler for around 30.00 & may work, I know pople use it for gaming models.
Also, Amorphium has a free version someplace that can be used to make morphs & stuff, Traveler has some tuts for this at Morphworld3.0. The Pro version is only $120.00 at http://www.universe3d.com/home.html Another interesting app is HexaSuper for $50.00 at http://www.shusaku.co.jp/hexa/super2.html. Meshwork is here:http://codenautics.com/meshwork/index.html
You might also get started by modifying existing clothing models, either the built-ins or free stuff. One way is to make transparency maps in an image program like PhotoShop - the cat suit is a favorite because it covers so much of the body. If you want to model clothes, load some in Poser without a figure and look at them with the various view modes (wireframe, shades with lines, etc.) to get an idea of how they are made, and the various approaches people use. An easy way to get started with modeling is to modify clothes models inside Poser with its magnets and deformers, which are well worth learning how to use. There are some good tutorials around. Have fun.

The shareware mesh program for Mac called MESHWORK can be used with Poser. I wrote a tutorial on how to do that: see the link (it is a 700K SIT file). This site uses cookies to deliver the best experience. Our own cookies make user accounts and other features possible. I am a registered user and am new to learning how to use Poser 4 on my Macintosh iBook. I have already surfed the Web looking for how-to/tutorials on creating clothing for Poser 4 and have only found materials that require the PC platform, like using Anim8or or UV Mapper (both are PC-specific only). I do not have Photoshop, nor do I intend to buy it. I've already spent big bucks on upgrading the iBook to 320 MB and buying Bryce 5, so, if there's a freeware Mac program available I'm all ears! Many thanks in advance to all who have useful info!
