This is something new. I started seeing these in the wee hours this morning. I went to bed at 3:30 am. Sometimes this picture replaces EVERY picture in a page. I had to do some fancy work to capture this image because it is an untitled bitmap... and bitmaps are not generally accepted for web usage. So I saved it as a jpg file. What is this all about? Others apparently don't see this image when I do.

I have not seen this, and I hope someone can explain this to us. Sharen

It's a first for me too. Now you've got me curious.

Ghostofmacbeth ( ) posted Sun, 02 December 2001 at 9:41 AM

I saw it yesterday for a little but but then it cleared up. Thught there was a problem with the server but don't know.

Elsina ( ) posted Sun, 02 December 2001 at 10:59 AM

I had missing images yesterday at Renderosity. I think Renderosity changed something yesterday, that cause all offsite linked images to renderosity to change into this image and it was the reason why we had the missing images at the site itself. My old server also did it.

And seeing other messages in the forum with images now, you need to load images to your own site instead of linking to renderosity. If not you"ll see the image above I guess.

Some members have been using scripts to save images from the galleries to their HDs automatically. Which put a tremendous strain on our servers. The Admins. have been programming the site so this image pops up if anyone tries to use a script like that in the future. They might need to tweak it for a while until it works without a hiccup. If you see a whole page of those alerts. Try emptying your Internet Cache. I've heard that will get rid of them. ScottA

The bandwidth pic hasn't appeared on my machine yet, but I was online the other night when Ron was seeing them. I happened to be in Instant Messaging, checking to see who else was currently logged on, and noticed one member with about 15 repetitions of his/her name. Is that a symptom of the scripting trick?

ScottA ( ) posted Sun, 02 December 2001 at 5:36 PM

I don't think so LD. Many people visit the forums here, go to another web site for a quick second, then come back. The people who stay logged in here and don't leave during that time period can see that when they are looking at the who's online page. It shows up as multiple instances of their names being listed. The scripts that are being targeted are strictly for the Galleries. ScottA

I see that graphic in all areas, including forums, free stuff..... I haven't been to a gallery since yesterday sometime. This is driving me nuts. I swear I saw that image on the Renderosity home page, in the place of every picture. I am not stealing bandwidth. I am just visiting the site like so many others.

ScottA ( ) posted Sun, 02 December 2001 at 9:45 PM

Now,Now April...be nice ;-) Ron, Several people were having the same trouble that you are having including some of the moderators here. It doesn't mean you are running any scripts yourself. Did you try emptying your internet cache? What web browser and version are you using? ScottA

Ahem, I work Technical Support for a major ISP... I routinely tell people about the advantages of cleaning out their Temporary Internet files (etc.) Maybe the Renderosity system is just having troubles dealing with the new changes, and will get over it?! I routinely have more than one browser window open. That's multi-tasking! I might be at free stuff and the Poser forums. Or I might be checking out my own site at the same time. I have Internet Explorer 6, and Windows XP.... A great combination!

OK.Thanks. I'll let the guys who do the programming know that you're still seeing those images. ScottA

I haven't seen those bandwidth warnings (using Netscape 4.6.1). But AOL (and maybe other ISPs) may try to download an entire site to its servers several times per day, so that AOL users can have slightly faster access. The solution is to contact AOL and ask them not to cache the site on their servers. So it could be that AOL users would get that bandwidth alert.

ScottA ( ) posted Mon, 03 December 2001 at 7:39 AM

Good idea nyar, But I'm using AOL and I've never seen them once. So I don't think ISP's are causing it. ScottA

I have Adelphia Powerlink, and their Technical Support is totally useless. I found that out by wasting and hour or so on the phone with them. I am a Technical Support Engineer myself, and it's pretty frustrating to talk to incompetent people on the phone... while my ear get sore and I have other things to do. At any rate, Adelphia has been pretty reliable. If there is a problem I just usually wait it out for a short time, and it's running again. I've been here at Renderosity for a few minutes and haven't seen any bandwidth alerts yet this morning. Maybe someone at Renderosity fixed the problem?!

ronknights ( ) posted Mon, 03 December 2001 at 8:53 AM

I spoke too soon. I've been on this site less than an hour, and was looking at some great information off the Home Page which talked about Victoria's body morphs. Suddenly I was assaulted with the Bandwidth Alert pictures all over the place...they replaced every graphic on every page. The only thing I can think that I'm guilty of is opening another browser window so I could check out a link on another site. If this is a problem, a crime, then I may as well quit my membership here. I know it's hard to maintain a web site, pay the bills, etc. I know too many people abuse a fine service, and you need to find a way to cope. But this is the wrong way.

Crescent ( ) posted Mon, 03 December 2001 at 9:36 PM

I doubt it's the multiple browser windows opening. I routinely have 3-4 windows open because I hate losing my place on the site. I'll often have one window as my place holder, then 2 or 3 open to my current points of interest. I may be in the gallery and have 2 windows open of pictures on that page that interested me or the main Poser forum page open with 2 windows for forum threads I'm reading. I haven't seen the bandwidth theft image yet.

Does anyone know what the Bandwidth Theft alert is supposed to mean or do?! Is it supposed to tell the offender that he is stealing bandwidth, or is it just supposed to bug the hell out of everyone, even if we have no way of doing anything to stop or catch the thieves? This makes no sense. We are a graphic community. We express ourselves through pictures. We help each other and show examples of our lessons with pictures. We cannot accomplish this goal, or even function when ALL our pictures in some cases are replaced by this curse. Has Renderosity even thought of a public announcement telling us what this Bandwidth Theft Alert is supposed to be all about? I personally find it very upsetting and frustrating, and am about ready to leave this community. I don't have time or energy for this problem.
