I am a fellow Brycer looking to get into modeling.
I am looking into getting a 3D app so I can make my own models. Basically I want to make objects that I just cannot find on the web for free. I use Bryce and Poser as my current 3D scene creators but I am looking to expand. I notice that Caligari has specials on Truespace (TS4 for 99.00 and TS5 for 299.00) I am just starting out so the 99.00 price tag is nice but... my questions:

  1. Is TS4 worth it? probably, but should I go for TS5? is is that much better for the money (which is kinda on the tight side but I only have a few days left on the specials)
  2. Should I save my pennies and go for Carrara ?(at 399.99 this would be my upper limit as I am just a beginner)
  3. What is better TS or Carrara?
  4. what would you do?

Any help would be very appreciated!!!!!!

I never used Truespace or Carrara, but I do have RDS 5.5 which I'm not very fond of. Been learning IE Universe lately, I would suggest to get an app that supports NURBS. Not sure if those two do, look into it. You'll be happy with what can be accomplished with NURBS. I here Rhino is one of the best, has a higher price tag though.

Rhino is great and you can get it for $180 if you are a student. you can get a fully functional demo that lets you save 25 times--you can still use it after that but you cant save anything. We have a great Rhino forum here with lots of talented and helpful people so come and check it out :)

If it's just great modelling you're after, try Amapi before you buy anything... The 4.1 version is free and I've been using it with Poser and Bryce with great results... My seven year old daughter modelled a convincing wine glass the other day in 10 minutes!! The more recent version is, I believe, about $100 which is good value in anybody's book! Nurbs supported :) Of course... Amorphium 1.1 is good for models with HIGH poly-counts and that's free, too!

There's a free modeler at http://www1.sphere.ne.jp/mizno/main_e.html the freeware saves in dxf, cob, x, and several others. Bryce will import just fine. its undocumented, but has a fantastic metaball capability. I really like the software and really really like the price.
