Check the Blender web site (I think its blender.com); Blender is a movement program that allows you to create bvh files. They have a pretty decent library of files in the native format, but they show how these can be redone as .bvh. And the software is free.

Well, blender.com aint the link I thought it was. But if you check the Poser archive, theres been an earlier discussion of this, in just the last two weeks, and it will take you to the right place.

Credo, the company that makes LifeForms, has a very wide variety of BVH files available: some free samples, most for low cost. I've used some of them, and they are well made, generated from real-life motion, and work directly in Poser with no adaptation needed. (Their website doesn't quite make this clear; it implies that the BVH's are really for use with LifeForms.) The Credo site: http://www.credo-interactive.com/products/index.html

http://www.blender3d.com ...but unfortunately, I couldn't find any bvh motion files. Anyone seen any? Anywhere else? Kinda easier than create them in Poser... ;-)

Kryx, theyre in native blender format, but the software allows you to rewrite them into bvh.

scaramouche found this small treasure hoard of BVH files while surfing the 'Net (link above). Not much in the way of fight motions, but plenty of walk, run, and dance motions.

The bad news is that they're in Blender's native .blend format.

The good news is that you can import them into Blender (still free! now available for Mac OS-X!) and then save them as .bvh. They might require a little tweaking after import into Poser.

If you have money to burn, you'll also find plenty of commercial .bvh files (mostly from Biovision and Credo) available at Turbo Squid. Most of them start at $25 per file, however. wolf359's package here in the Marketplace is an incredible bargain by comparison, and he's planning to make more.

Get the current 3dWorld magazine at Barnes & Noble. It's got sample BVH files from 3 or 4 vendors.

Keep in mind that all bvh files are not necessarily motion capture. You can keyframe animation in Poser (and other apps) and export as BVH.

One last thing that I have done although it is somewhat time consuming. I've done a Google search for 'motion capture bvh', and after waiding through a few hundred links, was able to find a fairly large number of scattered demo BVH's from a number of companies and universities. I also played around with the search criteria to dig up a few more. Since some of them state 'do not distribute', I haven't put them up anywhere.
