Subject: Little Dilemma creating a simple

Hi,   First, I am a newbie in modeling.    I have been trying to model an extrememly simple item in Ray Dream 5.5 for use in Poser. But when I import it, some of the faces appear to be missing - just on one side. I am doing a Free Form model. Basically draw the profile and extrude it in one direction. It looks perfectly fine in Ray Dream. I have tried making all normals consistent. I have loaded the model in UVMapper and tried the various fixes there with no luck. Any Ideas?

I've taken free-form RDS 5.5 objects into Poser without any problem before. You've exported it as an *.obj file? You might try exporting it as a *.dxf; I think Poser can import them. (I don't have my machine with RDS and Poser in front of me now or I'd try it.) As for the vanishing faces -- is it the start of the extrusion or the end of it? Or is it one of the other sides? Could you post a pic to show us what's going on? Might help to figure it out. - Dex

After selecting the imported object, you can open the group edit tool in Poser, create a new group, select the polygons that appear to have their normals flipped, and invert the group normals. But if they were backfaces to begin with, it means the other side won't show in preview mode. Poser will render backfaces according to the texture of the other side, but it can be disorienting. This happens with a model in areas that have no thickness (1-sided planes or surfaces). I don't recall if Ray Dream has an "Add thickness" command, but that's how I'd fix such a problem in Carrara. That way, there are no more backfaces to cause problems in Poser.

RDS has an "add thickness" command
-but-
it's in the mesh modeler.

DonnyD, see my post in t'other forum. ;=]

The "problem" with adding thickness is that you have to add to the file size. You will be able to see it in the poser preview window & that's the only advantage. It should still render fine even though you can't see the back.

Absolutely true, when you "add thickness," you create more polygons and increase the file size. ;=]
