I want to create an actual object that I can edit and change the material but not lose the fact that its a basketball. I have an image that i have used as a surface image but i would prefer to have the actual object take on those characteristics............any suggestions would be greatly appreciated Thanks in advance!!

not absolutely sure what you have in mind but your best bet to change the look of the basketball but maintain that it's a basketball would be to use a basketball bump map texture and then just change your diffuse and ambiance maps to suit your needs.
