monotonous. the features that you haven't completed are the one's that give it "life". What you have is a good base keep going. as far as to light & to dark, that is subjective. people are a rainbow of brown tones so there is no right or wrong. after looking at many peoples texture WIP, I've come to the conclusion that looking at the face at an angle is easier to jugde than looking at the face straight on. also a black background & brighter lighting makes it easier.

I have tried to create some photorealistic textures, by taking photos of folks I know, developing and then scanning the photos, then cutting parts of the photos out, applying them to the face template, and then making it uniform, etc. But after making a couple of faces, I feel a little bummed out, because I don't want to create the body texture, just the faces! I would say that overall your texture looks smooth, which is good. However, perhaps some variation in the skin tones, cheeks, eyelids, etc - would be good, in creating a look of life - or you could even put light green veins throughout the figure, and dark eyes, creating a scary look! Good start! Now, I would say move towards making this texture different, and unique. More variation or distinguishing characteristics. . . Is this your first time making a texture? Don't you love it when it renders, and it actually covers the model, and you're like "yes!" - Ben MessianicArt.com

It's hard to paint textures, you can also make pictures of real skin, that is what I mostly do. Sometimes I paint it. Here can you see a pic of real skin I made. VCD
