Subject: what's the dif between .3ds and .max files?

Like the subject line says. I'm trying to learn what some programs are other than poser, but I'm totally clueless. How do you make 3D Studio Max open a .3ds file?

In the margin, under the Software Forums heading. The first link is the 3DS Max forum - you might get a quicker response there. (If I knew offhand, I'd tell you....)

Both filetypes are native 3D Studio Max formats. .3ds is mainly geometry, much like Poser's .obj files. .max is a complete session (animation, camera placement, lights, geometry, etc.), much like Poser's .pz3 format.

To open a .3ds file in Max, use the import function in the main file menu. Same as you would for dxf or any other format.

Thanks. And I posted the message in this forum since I've used the Max forum before and never got a reply at all. Plus, I only want to learn other programs so that I can do more with Poser, but if my post was too OT, I'm sorry.

Not a problem, we try & answer anything we can here, but I saw no one had responded in nearly an hour, & thought if you posted there, you might get a quicker response. (Only wish I'd known the answer.... :-))

There's a lot of people at this forum using max with poser including myself and I know for a fact that you get faster answer here then at the max forum So just keep asking!!
