Subject: Mac vs. Carrara: Open & Save Crashes

Submitted for the Carrara General Knowledge / Live-And-Learn file:
Subcategory Mac vs. Carrara File:

I was having a problem with Carrara crashing at Open and Save dialogs. Specifically, C would open one file, then crash as I opened a second file. Or I would open a file, work on a shader, try to attach a texture map and crash as I pressed the Open button. Or I would work on a file, render, save the render (once), then crash if I tried to save-as (twice). I developed work-arounds for all of these, thinking it was a bug. At each crash Norton Crash Guard reported it as a "Bus Error Exception", making me think I just need to give C more memory (but it's taken all I have). I finally got around to troubleshooting it as an extension conflict - which it was.

Long story short, C conflicts with the Navigation 1.0.1 extension of Mac OS 8.1. This was probably fixed in OS 8.6, or OS 9, or X. Don't laugh at me, I'm still working with a 8500 with added G3/300 processor. I just wanted to share this because somebody, somewhere may have the same problem.

Good info! Just curious are you afraid to upgrade to 9? Or is it a money thing? The reason I ask is that even with your hardware you will see a noticable stability and performace change by upgrading to 9.2. I don't think you can still buy 9.2 at retail, but if you by OSX then you get 9.2 full version included. Depending on your G3 card, you can use a driver to make 10.1 work on your system just fine. The bottom line is that 9.2.x is much more stable then os8.x ever was. Regards, PAGZone

The reason is stubbornness, really. I'm not going to upgrade the OS (again) until I upgrade the hardware, and I keep putting that off. That depends on balancing the purchase of a new system with the rest of my life - and you know, of course, I'd have to get the dual 1Ghz G4.

Then again, maybe the reason is also sentamentality. This 8500 has been through a lot. The plastic front is discolored; the fan is noisy and the 2nd drive is noisier; I've taken it apart and put it back together many, many times and it still works.

Aw, who am I kidding. The reason is money.
