Subject: never photgraph a fly

bonbon ( ) posted Fri, 19 April 2002 at 9:54 AM · edited Thu, 09 January 2025 at 2:09 PM

don't you hate it when your subject wont stay still?? try reasoning with the common housefly just wont work.... tried to capture a shot of a fly sitting on a glass... damn lil sucker just would'nt sit still.... even tried bribing it with leftovers! grr

spray it with Raid. That'll kill it, but leave it intact. Then, like poser, you can mold your fly into all sorts of dirty sexual positions for your veiwing pleasure.

SueO ( ) posted Fri, 19 April 2002 at 10:06 AM

You can do it. Early in the morning works well, when they are cold and kind of sluggish. Also, I've heard that painting sugar water around gets their attention. Or you can use my method, which will yield several hundred REALLY crappy shots and one pretty good one. I'll post an example, if I can figure out what I called it :D.

haha ry.. hairspray works too... i use that on spiders! thanks sue :)

Flies are REAL hard to get...they have that weird "bug sense" that warns them right before you snap a pic. Anyhow's here's one that I was able to get! L8r!

Here's one of my better efforts, using the "just keep trying " method. Note this is probably 50% of the original and the framing is STILL definitely not delightful...but the shot is reasonably sharp.

PunkClown ( ) posted Sat, 20 April 2002 at 1:56 AM

You guys make me laugh! The only way I got any semi-decent shots of a fly was when it was well and truly dead, then I took some photos of it under a jeweller's loupe to make it look BIG! (but to get a live one...never succeded) L8R and Sue's examples are pretty cool! ;-)>

If you observe them for long enuff..(Yeah I have a life) they often seem to land in the same general area a majority of the time. I'm thinking maybe they "MARK" their spot or somethin' like that! Thats what I noticed with the one I took a pic of on the fence. Would buzz around then land on the same post! L8r!

Dear SueO... ...I'm stunned by your macro..!! :)

JordyArt ( ) posted Sat, 20 April 2002 at 2:54 PM

Tsk, Michelle, what sort of guy do you think I am? Yeah, they're called flies here too....but no pics of mine, sorry..... 'Course if you ask REALLY nicely.......... (",)

SueO ( ) posted Sat, 20 April 2002 at 4:00 PM

Thanks all. L8R is right: they tend to hang around the same favorite place. Misha is right too; this is a large fly, probably a cm long, altho' nowhere near 2lb. :D. Equipment helps. I used a 105 macro with three extension tubes, and I was handholding. I probably threw out one hundred frames to get this one. Will put up another, of a smaller fly with better detail (and equally crappy framing) shortly. Sue

OK here's the best one, and a blow up of a detail, to show you why it pleased me so much. Same rig and method as the one above.

L8RDAZE ( ) posted Sun, 21 April 2002 at 2:23 PM

SUEO! your macro pix are just awesome! I REALLY like those wings in the 2nd shot...looks like their made of SARAN WRAP! You'd think they'd fall off the way these guys buzz around like minature jet fighters! Its funny how something perceived as disgusting or "yucky" by most of us, can be shown in such a different kinda light! COOL STUFF! L8r!

doruksal ( ) posted Mon, 22 April 2002 at 2:54 AM

Dear Sue, I'm struck..!
These last two pics, esp. the last one are fabulous..!!!

PunkClown ( ) posted Mon, 22 April 2002 at 6:03 AM

Fantastic Macros! Creeepy...that green fly is bizarre, and the hairs growing out of it! I'm not breaking out in hives like Star, just shuddering uncontrollably! :-)>
