The contour maps have to be traced in a drawing program, and then each height assigned a grey level. This gives a stepped landscape. I then convert this to a bitmap, and carefully apply just the right amount of gaussian blur, removing the steps but retaining as much horizontal contour detail as possible. This is then used to generate a landscape in vue. The original photographs were used to exactly define the contours traced, and so the photo can be overlayed exactly. There's a lot of work involved, and they are done for research, not to look good, but I was astounded at how good they do look. The vertical scale is of course exagerated in this image.

A friend is doing some historical and archaeological research in an area near here. He has lots of aerial pictues, and contour maps, but these never give a real view of the landscape, and the area is to large to take in from one spot. So we are producing images like this using Vue. Animations really bring out the terrain.
