the default "max" res for an AVI is only 640 X 480. anyone figure out how to (if possible) change this to higher res? and stay that way as the default "max" res?

In the Animation menu, select Animation Setup. Enter your desired res in Frame Width and Height. I'm not sure how you could change that to the default resolution. Maybe if you click the Set Preferred State button in the General Preferences panel (Edit menu) ....

in 3dsmax.ini (you can open it with a notebook) you'll find line like this: [PresetOutputSize3] PresetWidth=640 PresetHeight=480 type in your desired size!
