Subject: Need a good smile

Can anyone recomend a good character That has a nice smile face. I'm needing a nice broad ( showgirl/ Beauty queen) Smile for Vicky and one for Michael too. Most of the faces that seem to come with the Michael Charaters seem more somber and alot of intense faces and the vicky characters have a lot of nice closed lip smiles, but I need teeth. I've tried making them myself and just can't get it right. It's more a problem with the eyes, I think. They just look kind of embarrassed or worse yet constipated I have Vicky or and Michael 2 if anyone would be willing to share the dial setting for a nice smile Thanks for you help Notime6

Look into Mile of Smiles by nfredman at the Marketplace-- it's reasonably priced and chock full of any kind of smile you need-- works on any character, it's supposed to be fore V2 but I've used them on Mike and Stephanie to varying results. If you have just Nooooo money to spend, try using small negative amounts on frown-- slightly different for each side, Mouth morpheme A produces a wideish smile. Make sure you've let the eyelids blink a teensy bit and you might want to widen the pupil. I usually do smaller smiles because most of my big smiles look dorky. But this is a start. Part lips also gives you some teeth, but use it sparingly. Miles of Smiles has several wide convincing smiles. Check out nfredman's store and see. I'm not her, I don't get a commission.:)) Emily

If you're looking for a wide variety of expressions, many with a realistic slight assymmetry, you might be interested in my P4FemXprssnMagic. I made it partly because I wanted to mix-and-match a lot of eye and mouth expressions, without endlessly scrolling up and down through library thumbnails. Besides crinkling the eyes a bit and deepening the dimples, there is something else to consider: head angle. The human head is usually carried tilted slightly down (much of the weight is in front of the vertabral column supporting it). A straight on stance is aggressive or assertive. A head tilted slightly up (exposing a bit more of the neck) is vulnerable and wide open. Many people when they grin "from ear to ear", lift their heads, too. It is subtle, but body language is often a complex combination of signals... and not all of them from the same muscle group. Carolly

(Excuse the nasty compression I had to inflict on this animation.) There's really a lot you can do with expressions with the current generation of figures.

Any of these mouth poses would convey a somewhat different emotion if paired with another eye expression. We pick right up on the falseness of a "warm" smile with expressionless eyes, although it may not the be the feeling the artist intended.

Carolly is right about small head nodding - also left or right head tipping. An immobile head doesn't look natural, unless you're trying to convey a rigid character or tense situation. All of this is useful not just for animation, but for any series of images of a character. Now if we just had a figure that could do a decent shrug... Elisa/gryffnn
