Subject: Question on Poser Pro Pack

kayjay97 ( ) posted Sun, 26 May 2002 at 7:11 AM · edited Tue, 10 December 2024 at 9:26 AM

I just purchased it and when I go to install it it said it will replace certain files and if I have modified them to back them up. my question is what kind of files will it replace? I guess what I am asking is... will it wipe out any of my libraries?

It won't wipe out your libraries. Essentially it does replace the poser.exe file and some supporting files for the program itself. It also replaces a few of the models and textures. If you made any changes to these but saved them under a new name and kept the original then you won't have a problem.

WOW! That was fast! Thank you so much. Off hand I can't think of anything off hand but I wanted to be sure, What about RSR files? Will those also change? Will I need to go to convert them all to png?

The first time you open a library folder (e.g. Characters -> People) inside Poser Pro, it will create PNGs from all the RSRs it finds there - you need do nothing. If you want to save disc space then you can delete the RSRs after they've been converted, but leaving them alone won't affect anything (or at least it doesn't for me.) -- Mark

Thank you again! Well.... it seems it doesn't matter as I don't know how to register it. I live in S Korea and bought it online as shipping and taxes are so high here. I got my confirmation from Curious Labs and everything but when I go to open up Poser it needs the registration number. I have my Poser 4.03 reg number but I'll be darn if I know how to get the Pro Pack one and it won't let me in without it. Says I have a 14 day grace period to register. I have written to Curious Labs about it so in the meantime I am dead in the water............ sigh............... Took me a long time to convince hubby I needed this and now this................

Ahhh yes! I got a copy on disk and the reg number came with it. Next thing you know you will be grabbing the SR3 update to it and will run into another problem with that. It might tell you that no valid products were found to update. There is a blurb on the CL site about it but I will save you the search time now. If you recieve that message when attempting to update the Pro Pack just restart the update but this time tell it you will find the copy you want to update. It's autofind feature tends to be buggy.

Oh about the RSR's: After installing Pro-Pack I went through and deleted the RSR's from my geometries folder as those are no longer used. Gave me about 35% of my drive space back. The RSR's in the libraries folder were a different story. I went into each of my libraries so that pro-pack will do the conversion and then deleted those RSR's. The savings in space was very small. So I would say don't worry about this one as if you miss a file to convert you lose out but not deleting doesn't save much on disk space. My next task is running through all my CR2 files and finding the references to BUM files. These files are fairly large and Pro-Pack has no need for them as it can bring in JPG files as bump maps now. I expect another large increase in my available drive space.

kayjay97 ( ) posted Sun, 26 May 2002 at 8:15 AM

Actually, it installed fine with no hitches. I understood from the CL website that Poser Pro PAck is completely functional for 14 days then it HAS to be registered. I understood that to mean they email you the reg number but you could still use it in the mean time. But that's not the case. The screen that comes up insists on the number and it is locked against privacy but at the top of it, it says you have 14 days. So you tell me... what am I misunderstanding here? As for the bum files.......... does that mean I can delete all bum files from my texture folders? and when you say running through all your CR2 files are you talking about a text editor and how do you do that? This program is massive on my hard drive already and more so with Pro PAck and anything would help

Kay: yes you can delete the BUM files, but only after you have changed all your CR2 references over to the JPG versions. You can do it one of two ways: In Poser, open each and every old Prop, Character, Hair, etc. And look to see if it is using a BUM file for it's bump map. If it is then change this to the JPG or other file format usable by poser. Once they are all changed you can delete all those BUM files. Outside of poser. This is my plan. I'm going to use the windows search to run through the Poser Runtime folder and find all files that have the string ".bum" in them. I will then open them in a text editor and change that string to the extension of the bump map if there is a second file used to let Poser generate the BUM. Keep in mind that without Pro-Pack, poser will always convert files to BUM when they are loaded into the bump channel. Once I get all those files changed I will do a mass delete on any and all BUM files I find under the Poser Directory. Keep in mind that this is a plan and I haven't yet done this so you may want to hold off until you find out if it works for me or not.

Went into my folder did a search and really, hardly came up with a whole lot of bump maps. Most of mine are templates. Yeah, I'll hold off till you see if it works. You will let us know how it went??

About that serial number ... you should have gotten a little instruction guide booklet with the Pro Pack cd. Open the booklet and see if the serial number sticker is on the table of contents page, in the right hand margin. That's where mine is and I don't believe I'm the one who put it there. -darlisa

Hey darlisa! Thanks for replying! Problem here is I live in South Korea. Taxes and shipping are really high here so I purchased it online. I don't have a CD :-( All I have is my order number and software I can't use. I have emailed CL about it. Funny thing is even when you send them a customer question they want the reg number. LOL. Anyway I hope to hear from them soon although right now it is 7:54 Monday morning my time so I have a feeling I am in for a wait. I am really frustrated right now. It won't even let me use the 14 day grace period......... sigh..........

Monday is a national holiday here in the US (Memorial Day), but perhaps someone from CuriousLabs will be in the office anyway. They're good people. Meanwhile, when you ordered ProPack online, did you get a confirmation email with an order number? Sometimes serial numbers or registration keys come that way, and you might have overlooked it. kayjay97 ( ) posted Sun, 26 May 2002 at 6:16 PM

Hey Carolly! Yes I got an order confirmation through email. I am looking at it right now. It has my order number, my billing addy, the way I paid, my shipping addy Product I bought, how many and price. That's it!

Glad you found the serial number! I didn't realize that when you said you ordered it online that you meant you downloaded the program, but I can see that now. -darlisa

hauksdottir ( ) posted Mon, 27 May 2002 at 12:25 AM

kayjay, I'm so glad that it was in there, after all. It was the obvious place to hide it. (There is a story about a Purloined Letter where it was "hidden" by posting it on a bulletin board in plain sight.) Perhaps you'll want to write the number down in a couple of places which will be logical to you since you don't have a box or CD to scribble it on. Meanwhile, have fun with the program! Carolly

kayjay97 ( ) posted Mon, 27 May 2002 at 12:59 AM

darlisa, thank you for your help! Carolly, yeah, it was pretty sneaky of them to hide it where I could find it huh?? LOL. I have that number down in so many place now. I bet the guys and gals at CL are shaking their heads and laughing their you know whats off saying, Well, we have yet ANOTHER one!
