I'm not from there, but I had the pleasure of staying there for 5 days in '98 while on tour with Thor. I LOVED Toronto! The band had a total blast. Is the Opera House still around? (Sorry if this is an irrelevant reply, I just totally fell in love with it "up there!" I'm actually in Charlotte, NC USA)
Digital Eyes, you may find some peicework (contract stuff) in the film and tv industry there. lord knows when I lived there for two years it was simple enough for me to get work. check out the fx companies for that ( the list of companies is actually available at city hall. ~g~ ) also, pr firms can usually use people for graphic work. put together a few poster renders and make yourself a portfolio. the more variety in what you presentr the better chance of getting an offer. more headaches but better income possible to be independant and contract for specific images with a company, they get the cust, and get you to make the images. the ttc has a lot of need for posters, can't remember offhand what company does the work for them. just a couple of ideas for ya. (would work in any city anywhere actually)
THX :) I was thinking about trying to find some fx companies, but never got around doing that. I'm not really sure where to look for possible clients and also, every time I start looking for fx, 3D, texturing or any of that kind of jobs I end up looking at Vancouver sites. by the way, ... where are you now??? and when did you live here?
was in 95 to 97 and I'm in Vancouver. ~G~ give it until the first, then Stormrage will be back here with me. no be online or accepting phone calls for a couple of weeks then. ~EFG~ city hall had a booklet available when I worked in films out there, can't remember exactly what it was called but it listed all film related businesses, numbers and address, by name, by specialisation, and by location. think it was only around 20 but not sure about that.
yellow pages, find the companies that do advertising and they are your clients. the people that actually want the image are thier clients. hard to get started, but good money possible. be contracted to three to 10 advertising firms, do images when they come to you. get check when you deliver the image. no regular paycheck though. only real drawback until you built your reputation. once known for good work the companies start trying to get you on payroll...stay independant at that point.
